What Is It
Definition of a Parabola
A parabola is the set of all points (𝑥, 𝑦) in a plane that are equidistant from a
fixed line called the directrix, and a fixed point called the focus which is not on the
line. A parabola has an axis of symmetry perpendicular to its directrix and passes
through its vertex. The vertex of the parabola is the midpoint of the segment
connecting the focus and the directrix.

Equation of a Parabola with vertex at the origin
The equation of a parabola with vertex (0, 0) are 𝑦 2 = 4𝑝𝑥 when the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 is
the axis of symmetry and 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦 when the 𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 is the axis of symmetry. When
𝑝 > 0 and the axis of symmetry is the 𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠, the parabola opens up. When 𝑝 <
0 and the axis of symmetry is the 𝑦 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠, the parabola opens down. When 𝑝 > 0 and
the axis of symmetry is the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠, the parabola opens right. When 𝑝 < 0 and the
axis of symmetry is the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠, the parabola opens left.
The table below summarizes the standard features of parabolas with a vertex
at the origin.
Directrix 𝑦 = −𝑝 𝑥 = −𝑝
Graph
Note: |𝑝| is the distance of the directrix to the vertex and focus to the vertex. The
distance of the directrix to the vertex is the same as the distance of focus to vertex.
|2𝑝| is the distance of the focus to the directrix
7
Example:
Complete the given table by filling in the missing values.
b. Axis of symmetry: Since the equation is in the form 𝑦 2 = 4𝑝𝑥, then its axis
of symmetry is horizontal at 𝑦 = 0.
2. Given:
Equation: 𝑦 2 = −4𝑥; focus:(−1,0)
8
ii. Take the negative of 𝑝 then write it in the form of 𝑥 = 𝑝.
𝑥=1
Therefore, the directrix is 𝒙 = 𝟏.
3. Given:
Equation: 𝑥 2 = 8𝑦; directrix:𝑦 = −2
4. Given:
focus:(0, −5); directrix: 𝑦 = 5
a. Equation:
i. Determine the form of the equation to be used.
Since the focus is in the form (0, 𝑝), the equation of the parabola to
be used is 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦.
ii. Determine the value of 𝑝.
The focus of the parabola is in the form (0, 𝑝). Using the given focus
which is (0, −5), the value of 𝑝 is −5.
iii. Substitute the value of 𝑝 to the equation 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦 and simplify.
𝑥 2 = 4(−5)𝑦 Going back to the equation 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦, we
have to substitute −5 to 𝑝.
2
𝑥 = −20𝑦 Simplify: 4(−5)
Therefore, the equation of the parabola is 𝒙𝟐 = −𝟐𝟎𝒚.

10
ii. Substitute the value of 𝑝 to the equation 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦 and simplify.
𝑥 2 = 4(4)𝑦 Going back to the equation 𝑥 2 = 4𝑝𝑦, we
have to substitute 4 to 𝑝.
1. 𝑦 2 = 4𝑥 (1,0) 𝑥 = −1 Horizontal (𝑦 = 0)
3. 𝑥 2 = 8𝑦 (0,2) 𝑦 = −2 Vertical (𝑥 = 0)
5. 𝑦 2 = 9𝑥 9

A. Find the vertex, value of p, axis of symmetry, focus, and directrix of the
following equation of a parabola.
1. (𝑦 + 5)2 = −16(𝑥 − 2)
Solution:
The given equation is in the form of (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 4𝑝(𝑥 − ℎ). In this case the
vertex is (2, −5).
Solution:
𝑥−ℎ =0 𝑦−𝑘 =0
𝑥−2=0 𝑦 − (−5) = 0
𝑥=2 𝑦+5−5= 0−5
𝑦 = −5

Therefore, the parabola (𝑥 − 8)2 = −2(𝑦 − 4) has a vertex of (𝟖, 𝟒), 𝒑 = − 𝟐; axis
𝟕 𝟗
of symmetry of 𝒙 = 𝟖; focus of (𝟖, 𝟐) ; and directrix of 𝒚 = 𝟐.
13
B. Find the standard equation of the Parabola given the following characteristics.
c. Value of 𝑝
Use the coordinate of the focus which is in the form of (ℎ, 𝑘 + 𝑝).
Since we are looking for the value of 𝑝, we have to substitute the
given 𝑘 and the y-coordinate of the focus which is −3.
Focus:
(ℎ, 𝑘 + 𝑝) = (4, −3) Given
𝑘 + 𝑝 = −3 Substitute the value of 𝑘 + 𝑝
which is −3.
2 + 𝑝 = −3 Substitute the value of 𝑘 which
is 2.
𝑝 = −3 − 2 Subtract both sides by 2.
𝑝 = −5 Simplify.
Step 2: Substitute the values for ℎ, 𝑘, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝 into the equation of a parabola
with a vertical axis of symmetry.
(𝑥 − ℎ)2 = 4𝑝(𝑦 − 𝑘) Equation of parabola with
vertical axis of symmetry.
2
(𝑥 − 4) = 4(−5)(𝑦 − 2) Substitute the value of
𝑘, 𝑝, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ℎ.
Therefore, the standard equation of the parabola with vertex at (𝟒, 𝟐) and focus
at (𝟒, −𝟑) is (𝒙 − 𝟒)𝟐 = −𝟐𝟎(𝒚 − 𝟐).
14
2.Vertex at (4, 1) and directrix of 𝑥 = −3
c. Value of 𝑝
Use the given directrix, 𝑥 = ℎ − 𝑝, which is 𝑥 = −3.
Directrix: 𝑥 = ℎ − 𝑝
𝑥 = −3 Given directrix.
ℎ − 𝑝 = −3 Substitute the given directrix.
4 − 𝑝 = −3 Substitute the value of ℎwhich
is 4.
−𝑝 = −3 −4 Subtract both sides by 4.
−𝑝 = −7 Simplify.
𝑝=7 Multiply both sides by −1.
Step 2: Substitute the values for ℎ, 𝑘, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝 into the equation of a parabola
with a horizontal axis of symmetry.
Therefore, the standard equation of the parabola with vertex at (𝟒, 𝟏) and
directrix of 𝒙 = −𝟑 is (𝒚 − 𝟏)𝟐 = 𝟐𝟖(𝒙 − 𝟒).
