This document is a physics module on electric charge from Missionari Della Fede Community High School. It contains information on the history of the electron and electric charge, the two types of electric charge (positive and negative), and how like charges repel and unlike charges attract. It also discusses the conservation of electric charge and its quantization in units of e. It provides conversion formulas between units of coulombs and millicoulombs, microcoulombs, nanocoulombs, and picocoulombs. The document compares the similarities and differences between electric forces and gravitational forces. Finally, it presents practice problems for students to determine the magnitude and nature of electrical forces, gravitational forces, and the permitt

TOPIC: THE ELECTRIC CHARGE

The word for amber, “electron”, is the origin of the terms electricity and electron. The Greek did not
discover the electron; even though the notion of a small charge – carrying particle was hypothesized by a number
of early philosophers and scientists, there was no clear experimental demonstration of the existence of the electron
until the late 1880s.the long history of scientific work on electricity is very interesting, but we will skip most of
the details and simply state a few key facts that may already be familiar to you.

1. There are two types of electric charge, called positive and negative. The subatomic particle called proton
has a positive charge, and an electron has a negative charge.
2. There are two nature of electric charge, attractive and repulsion. Like charges repel each other; unlike
charges attract.

3. We find that the total electric charge of the universe is a constant:

Electric charge is conserved. Also, electric charge is quantized in units of e. The atom that has lost an
electron is now positively charged – it is a positive ion. The atom that has gained an electron is now
negatively charged – it is a negative ion

In the SI system of units, charge is measured in coulombs (C) in honor of French physicist Charles De Agustin
Coulomb (1736 – 1806). Constant of coulomb’s law

CONVERT TO COULOMB’S UNIT

Millicoulomb - 1mC = 10^-3C
Microcoulomb - 1 μC =10^-6 C
Nanocoulomb - 1 nC =10^-9 C
Picocoulomb - 1pC = 10^-12 C

INVERSE
1 C = 10^3 mC
1 C = 10^6 μC
1 C = 10^9 nC
1 C = 10^12 pC
SIMILARITIES OF ELECTRIC FORCES AND GRAVITATIONAL FORCES
1. Both equations have same form
2. Both equations show an inverse square relationship between force and separation distance
3. Both equations show that the force is proportional to the product of the quantity that causes the force
4. Both electrical force and gravitational force are non-contact forces.

DIFFERENCES OF ELECTRIC FORCES AND GRAVITATIONAL FORCES

1. Coulomb’s law constant (k) is significantly greater than Newton’s universal gravitation constant (G)
2. Subsequently the force between charges
of electric force are significantly stronger than the force between masses of gravitational force.
3. Gravitational forces are only attractive; electrical forces can be either attractive or repulsive.
