BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Listening is the ability to interpret the message that is sent. It is one of the four
communication skills and is used the most. As active listeners, we must focus on the important
ideas in the text that we listened to. However; some listeners tend to comprehend the message
word for word which is not really necessary. Keywords are enough.

How do we determine the worth of ideas mentioned in the text listened to? We filter the
information we heard to allow us organize our thoughts in recognizing the main idea and
supporting details. In addition, we make inferences about the speaker’s intention.

Listening for main idea is the most important thing the speaker is trying to convey. It will
be repeated again to emphasize the point. It can be found at the beginning, in the middle, at the
end or sometimes implied from what is listened to. Meanwhile, supporting details describe the
main idea.
