Lab Handout - Installing Virtual Box and Ubuntu

Objective:
This handout takes you through the process of setting up your programming
environment for COMP3100.
2604 It describes the steps for installing a virtual machine (VM)
using Virtual Box and for installing the Ubuntu Operating System on your VM.

Download Installation Files

‣ Download the Virtual Box package that is appropriate for your platform (Windows,
Mac etc) from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.

‣ Download the Ubuntu Desktop OS from https://www.ubuntu.com/download

Install Virtual Box

‣ Navigate to your downloads folder and locate the Virtual Box package.

• Follow the steps in the setup wizard.

‣ Customise which features you would like to be installed.

‣ The VM manager has been successfully installed at this point. Next, we will set up a
virtual machine to host the Ubuntu OS.

‣ Select New from the VirtualBox Manager Menu. This creates a new virtual machine.

‣ Type a name for your virtual machine and select the options shown in the figure
below

‣ Follow the steps of the setup wizard.

‣ You need at least 10GB in order to install Ubuntu.

‣ The VM has been created. Next, we will install the Ubuntu OS on the VM.

‣ Highlight your VM and select Start from the VM Manager menu.

‣ Navigate using the drop down list to the download location where the Ubuntu OS
file was saved.

‣ Press the Start button.

‣ Select the Install Ubuntu option. This will install the OS on the virtual machine that
we created in the earlier steps. If you use the Try Ubuntu option, you will be able to
use the Ubuntu OS but none of the work done using that VM will be saved.

‣ Follow the steps of the setup wizard. The Ubuntu OS is being installed on a virtual
machine. Your host OS and its files will not be affected or erased during this
process.

‣ The Ubuntu Desktop is launched when the installation is completed successfully.

Explore as you would on a regular machine.

‣ The Dash Home (first icon on left menu) can be used to search for applications.

‣ Shut down the VM using the menu on the upper right corner.
