1. What is the amount of work done in moving a 100nC charge between two
points 5cm apart on an equipotential surface? 1
Ans. zero
2. A hollow metal sphere of radius 5cm is charged such that the potential on its
surface is 10V. What is potential at the centre of the sphere? 1
Ans.Potential at the centre of the sphere= potential on its surface= 10V
3. The electric potential V is constant on a surface. What can be said about the
electric field vector E? 1
Ans. Non zero perpendicular to the surface, zero along the surface.
5. What is the potential at the center of a square of each side √2 m, when four
charges 100μC, -50μC, 20μ C and -60μ C are placed at four corners of the square?
2
Ans. Distance of the centre point from the corner of the square r= 1/2 (√(√22 + √22)) = 1m
Net potential V= k{100-50+20-60}/1= 9 x 109 x 10 x 10-6 = 9 x 104 V
7. The graph shows the variation of Voltage V across the plates of two capacitors A
and B versus increase of charge Q stored on them. Which of the two capacitors
has high capacitance? Give reason. 2
B
V A
Q
Ans. As C= Q/V . In the graph slope gives V/Q. So B is smaller and A is bigger.
7. Two charges of 5nC and -2nC are placed at points(5cm,0,0) and (23cm,0,0) in a
region of space where there is no other external field. Calculate the electric
potential energy of this charge system. (-5x10-7J)
Ans Similar question solved in class.
8. What is the capacitance of the parallel plate capacitor filled with dielectrics?
K1 d/2
K2 d/2
10. A parallel plate capacitor, each with plate area A and separation d, is charged
to a potential difference V. The battery used to charge it remains connected. A
dielectric slab of thickness d and dielectric constant K is now placed between the
plates. What change, if any will take place in:
(i) charge on plates?
(ii) electric field intensity between the plates?
(iii) capacitance of the capacitor? Justify your answer in each case.
Ans. (i) new charge on the plate Q’ = C’ V’ = KCV= KQ
(ii) E’= V’/d = V/d =E
(iii) C’= KC
