B. Motivation
“I will present and read a paragraph and after
“Yes, teacher”
that you will determine what are the action
words that was used in the paragraph. Okay?”

Alex lost his job when he was laid off last month.
He looked for a new job. He talked to his friends (The students will listen to their teacher)
and looked online. Then one day he saw a HELP
WANTED sign in a store window. Alex went inside
and he filled out an application. The boss asked
him about his experience and skills. It was a short
interview. The next day the manager called him
and hired him. Alex was very lucky because he
found a new job.
“Now can you tell me what are the action words (lost, looked, talked, saw, went, filled, asked,
that are used in the paragraph?” called, hired, and found)

“What have you noticed to the action words that “Ma’am the action words are already
are used in the paragraph?” happened in the past.”

Very good! The action words are written in the (The students will listen to their teacher)
past tense if a verb.

C. Lesson Proper
“Our today’s discussion is about the past and past
perfect tense of verb. Before we start let us "Verb is a word used to describe an action.”
discuss what is verb? Any idea what is verb? Yes,
Joy.”

“Verbs is a word that expresses action (jump, run,

walk). Now let us move on to the simple past
form of the verb. We used the simple past tense
(The students will listen to their teacher)
to talked about the actions that happened at a
specific time in the past. There can be few actions
happening one after another and this can be in
terms of first events in the past that are now
finished. Second situation in the past and third a
series of action in the past.”

“Let us consider these examples. Please read the

first example. Yes, Veron.” “The Filipinos survived difficulties in the past.”

“This sentence tells something that happened in

the past and is now finished and we used the
verb which is in its simple past form which is “I lived in Ilocos Norte for 10 years.”
survived. Next one please read. Yes, Rona.”

In here we used the verb in its simple past tense

which is lived and the sentence expresses a “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
situation in the past. The third one please read.
Yes, Joan.”
“For the third example we have series of past “The past actions are came, saw, and
actions. What are the past actions in the third conquered.”
example? Yes, Luna.”

“Very good! Now we proceed with the past “The past perfect tense is used when you are
perfect tense. The past perfect tense is talking about a completed actions at some
sometimes being referred to as past in the past, point in the past before something else
why? Please read what’s in the presentation. Yes, happened.”
Ivone.”

“We are talking about two past actions where in

one action happened before the other action.“ (The students will listen to their teacher)

“Now how do we form the past perfect tense?

Please read what’s in the presentation? Yes, “The past perfect tense is formed by using the
Camile.” word “had” + past participle of a verb.”

(The teacher will present some examples on how

to form a past perfect tense) “Looking at these
examples we used the word had + written which
is the past participle of write. For the second one
we used the word had + arrived which is the past (The students will listen to their teacher)
participle of arrive. For the third one had + the
past participle of eat is eaten. Lastly had + the
past participle form become. Just be careful using
irregular verbs since they don’t follow a pattern
forming their past and past perfect form.”

“Let us also look at this sentence. Please read.

“After Jose had eaten dinner, John washed the
Yes, Joseph.”
dishes.”
“In here, we have two past actions. What are the
two past actions given in the sentence? Yes, “The two actions are had eaten and washed.”
Joyce.”
“The two past actions are had eaten and washed,
so if we are going to look at this example, we can
see that the past action had eaten happened first (The students will listen to their teacher)
before the other action washed. So, there is the
past in the past. Had eaten here is in the past
perfect tense and washed is in the simple past
tense.”

“In many cases a complete sentence is written in “The past perfect tense, to refer to the action
two parts with two different tenses. Please read. that happened first or earlier”
Yes, Lea”
“The past simple is to refer to the actions that
“Please read the second one. Yes, Goerge.”
happened second later.”
“Let us go back to our example a while back. “After Jose had eaten dinner, John washed the
Please read. Yes, Sofia.” dishes.”

“The first part of our sentence After Jose had

(The students will listen to their teacher)
dinner is in the past perfect tense and the second
part John washed the dishes is the simple past
tense. Now there are time expressions we used in
the past perfect tense and simple past tense. “
“Use after, as soon as, the moment that, until.”
“Please read the time expressions used in perfect
past tense. Yes, Clariza.”
“Use before, when, by the time.”
“How about the time expressions used in simple
past tense? Yes, Jenny.”

“There are time expressions used in indicating

(The students will listen to their teacher)
past and perfect tense (after, as soon as, the
moment that, until) are used before the past
perfect tense. While (before, when, by the time)
are used before simple past tense.”
“After she had moved out, I found her notes.”
“Let us see some examples here. Please read.
Yes, Mika.”
“In here we used the time expression after before “I didn’t say anything until she had finished
the past perfect tense which is had moved out. telling.”
Please read the second example. Yes, John.”

“In this sentence we used the time expression “Before I knew it, she had run out the door.”
until before the past perfect tense of had
finished. How about the next example for simple
past tense. Please read. Yes, Sam.”

“We used the time expression before and we “By the time he phoned her, she had found
could see that it was placed before the simple someone new.”
past tense of knew. Please read the last example.
Yes Miguel.”

“In here we used the time expression by the time "Yes, teacher”
and it's placed before the simple past tense
which is phoned. I hope that this simple example
gave you a clearer understanding about the use
of the time expression in the simple past tense
and past perfect tense. No questions? Are you
sure?

D. Application
“Get a piece of paper and analyze the given (The students will get a piece of paper)
pictures. Write a sentence for each picture using
the given clues or information. Use the past
perfect tense in writing your sentence.”
Ana had eaten before she slept.
1. Ana
Before Ana slept, she had already
Eat Sleep
eaten. When Ana slept, she had already
eaten.

2. Ben Ben had studied before he played.

Study Play Before Ben played, he had studied.
When Ben played, he had already studied.
3. Tina Tina had slept before she watched tv.
Sleep Watch Before Tina watched tv, she had already slept.

the verb is used to express actions that began
and ended in the past. Past perfect tense usually

that uses the past perfect tense provides two
actions in the past where in the first part action
or condition is completed ahead of another past
action.”
