Argumentative Essay
1. For the past few years issues mental health issues are on the rise globally. Different
organizations, celebrities and influencers have played their role in creating awareness on mental
health issues so the discussion around it can be normalized and people are able to seek medical
help. Critics are of the view that mental health issues did not exist earlier, and awareness
campaigns have led to more harm with every other person stating that they are depressed or
suffering from anxiety. Do you agree/disagree with critic’s claim of mental health being a myth?
2. Social media platforms have provided ordinary people an opportunity to express their
ideas on different local and global issues. The negative side of this dynamic is evident from
the rising cases of verbal abuse and online harassment through comments, videos and
memes. When questioned people state that they are exercising their right to freedom of
expression. Do you agree/disagree with this manifestation of freedom of expression?
3. The broadcasting of the Turkish drama Dirilis: Ertugrul on PTV caused an uproar amongst the
Pakistani entertainment industry. Some actors protested that foreign content should not be
broadcasted on national television and claimed that the government should work on empowering
the local industry rather than supporting foreign content. Other actors praised the drama calling it
educational with historical significance. Do you agree that dramas like Dirilis: Ertugrul should
not be broadcasted in Pakistan as they as they pose a threat to our cultural identity and
entertainment industry? Elaborate your answer with valid arguments.
4. Popular opinion states that the book reading culture is dying out and people are not reading
enough books as they used to in the past. Some people oppose this idea and state that the book
reading culture has evolved with technology and taken on forms like e-reading, listening to audio
books and even self-publishing. Young people are seen nor only reading but writing and
publishing content on platforms like Wattpad which has 80 million users and content is available
in more than 50 languages. Do you agree/disagree that the book reading culture is dying out and
platforms like Wattpad represent a decline of quality in writing?

PROMPT #2:
George Orwell said “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they
do not want to hear.” Freedom of expression is one of the basic rights of every human being, but
being given the power to be vocal about anything shouldn’t mean that anyone can just start
saying the things that will hurt the sentiments of others. That’s the problem with social media. It
gives the people the power to be vocal. This power can be used and has been used for good for
example raising voice against racism (BLM Movement), or any other social issue in society. But
we have to be careful to what extent we can use this power. Abusing and harassing someone
unnecessarily on social media should not be considered as freedom of speech because it can lead
to someone having mental health issues, it also promotes hate speech and intolerance among
teenagers.
These days we often see people spew venom against other communities and hurt the sentiments
of many people and when they are questioned they take the blanket of freedom of expression to
defend themselves. These practices must end as these people aren’t doing anyone any favors; and
are only spreading hate among the young generation. Instead we should promote why social
media bullying can lead to someone having mental health problems and raise awareness on this
topic.
Exercising the right of freedom of expression comes with its duties and responsibility; the
responsibility includes being able to use this power for the greater good for example, raising your
voice on issues about society, stopping the spread of hate and being vocally against it.
some people may say that they should be allowed to talk about anything they want even if it is
talking ill of someone and making fun of them but this type of freedom of expression isn't
helping anyone instead it is only causing more and more problems like depression, hate and other
mental health problems and that’s why there should be some rules; some boundaries for how far
we can use this power.
To conclude this essay i’d like to say that i'm completely pro-freedom of expression but that
doesn’ mean that freedom of expression would be used to express hate speech towards other
people, there should definitely be some rules and boundaries so that this power does get abused
in a sense that someone may never want to express their thoughts ever again on the internet, we
should be tolerant enough to listen to people, we should be mature enough to understand people;
and most importantly we should understand that our words affect others; so we should choose
them carefully.
