The work of Rene Estella Amper “Letter to Pedro, U.S Citizen, Also Called Pete”

tells about the old life the main character had when he still lived in the Philippines. The

author tells us about the corruption within society, the difference between the past and

the present, and also about the sentimental meaning of the character's childhood long

gone as they face their present life challenges. The poem wants to tell us about how the

old memories of the characters are being slowly taken down as the old town slowly

progresses and changes over time.

The poem suggests a lot of problems in society and how unfair the treatment is to

the poor. In this literary piece, we can see how the mayor keeps getting rich and the

farmers or other citizens are still poor. The mayor has slowly taken some of the land and

become richer, also putting danger in the land the characters had in their childhood just

for his own good, and the bridge was named after the congressman's wife just because of

the power that they have.

The writer openly ridicules the problems of corruption, poverty, prostitution, and

death in the old town of the present Philippine society. This is evident in the poem's use

of vivid imagery, such as churchgoers and believers who attend mass but do not listen to

the sermon, highlighting the concept of secularization as a religion. The poem delves

into the issues faced by Philippine society, revealing that they are often ignored and left

unresolved, while the character Peter/Pete enjoys a comfortable life in the United

States.

This piece hand touches upon some of the most pressing social issues of our time,

at the same time highlighting the importance of promoting strong friendships. Through

its depiction of characters who can maintain their connection despite physical distance,

the poem indicates the value of loyalty and devotion in friendships. Ultimately, it serves
