G8-W4 WS3 Energy of Visible Light

1) The document is a worksheet about the energy of visible light for an 8th grade science class. It discusses the visible light spectrum and how each color has a different wavelength and frequency. 2) The worksheet asks students to answer questions about which colors have the longest and shortest wavelengths, highest and lowest frequencies, and most energy based on a diagram of the visible light spectrum. 3) The answer key shows that red has the longest wavelength and lowest frequency while violet has the shortest wavelength and highest frequency, and therefore the most energy.

WORKSHEET 9: Energy of Visible Light

Name________________________________Year and Section___________________ Score____________________

Teacher______________________________ School___________________________________Date_____________
Objective: Relate wavelength, frequency, and velocity of colors to energy that it carries.

BIG IDEAS
 The term "light," we are referring to a type of electromagnetic wave that stimulates the retina of our
eyes. In this sense, we are referring to visible light, a small spectrum from the enormous range of
frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.
 This narrow band of visible light is affectionately known as ROYGBIV.
 Each color is characteristic of a distinct wavelength; and different wavelengths of light waves will bend
varying amounts upon passage through a prism. For these reasons, visible light is dispersed upon
passage through a prism. Dispersion of visible light produces the colors red (R), orange (O), yellow (Y),
green (G), blue (B), and violet (V).
