Teachers’ Notes 1

Task cards are great because they :

✓ are very versatile

✓ give students more opportunities to speak
✓ make it easier, less stressful for not so confident students

Can be used in a variety of ways in a classroom:

• To practice a grammar point/ target language that has been
taught
• As a warm up activity
• As a review of a previous lesson
• As a diagnostic tool for you
• To change the pace during the lesson and get the students
talking
• Can be used with pairs or groups

Preparation

Decide which set you are going to use and copy and cut out the
cards. Make enough sets for each group or pairs. If you want to use
them more than once, then either paste onto cardboard or
laminate. Otherwise, if you’re short of time you can use the paper
version.

I ‘ve included 2 sets of these cards. Each set has 16 cards:

Set 1a and 1b have the complete question provided.

Set 2a and 2b have question prompts for the same questions, so

also providing practice in asking questions.

Within each set, question 1 – 8 (Set 1a and 2a) are bit easier to
answer than Questions 9 -16 (Set 1b and 2b) which have
vocabulary that may not be familiar to all beginners.

Both Set 1 and Set 2 are available in a simple black and white
version or a coloured version.

The coloured cards look more visually appealing but not everyone
has access to a colour printer, so I’ve included the simple black and
white option too.

Teachers’ Notes 2

These task cards focus especially on the Present Simple tense and
asking and answering questions. Set 2 is more difficult

There are a variety of ways these cards can be used especially in

multi level classes.

You can choose which set you use according to your students' level
and your lesson objectives. In multi level classes you could use set
1 and Set 2 with different groups of students.

The cards can also be differentiated within each set as the

questions on cards 9 – 18 are more difficult.

More able students can be encouraged to give more extended

answers to the questions.

Divide class into groups or pairs. Give one set of cards (according to
student level) to each group or pair. Students put the cards in the
centre and each picks a card, asks the question to person on their
right who answers it. Further questions could be asked if students are
able. They then take turns in asking and answering questions until
they have used all the cards.

Feedback – ask someone from each group or pair to share something

interesting they learned about one of their classmates.

If you used the easier version, you may be able to repeat the
activity with the harder version as revision later in the course.
