AT Assignment 1-1

This document is an assignment problem submitted by student Zohaib Shoukat. The problem involves calculating the leakage of carbon dioxide gas from a cylinder over time. The student is asked to plot graphs of: 1) Amount of CO2 leaked vs specific volume of remaining gas 2) Amount leaked vs pressure 3) Specific volume vs pressure The student solves the problem step-by-step using the ideal gas law and a simulation software called EES to generate tables and plots of the variables. The plots show an inverse relationship between specific volume and pressure as CO2 leaks out and pressure decreases in the cylinder.

Assignment # 1
Name: Zohaib Shoukat
Class / section: BSEE(22-26) / A

Roll number: 080

Submitted to: Engineer Waqar Riaz

Problem:
(𝑹𝒐𝒍𝒍 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 × 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏) × 𝟑 kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is fed to a cylinder
having a volume of 40 m3 and initially containing (𝑹𝒐𝒍𝒍 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 × 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏) kg of CO2 at
a pressure of 10 bar. Later a pinhole develops and the gas slowly leaks from the cylinder.
(a) Plot the amount of CO2 that has leaked from the cylinder, in kg, versus the specific
volume of the CO2 remaining in the cylinder. Consider whole range of v from maximum
value to zero.
Solve using EES
(b) Assuming CO2 as ideal gas, plot the amount of CO2 that has leaked from the cylinder, in
kg, versus the Pressure of the CO2 in the cylinder. Solve using EES
(c) Assuming CO2 as ideal gas, plot specific volume of gas in cylinder versus the Pressure of
the pressure in the cylinder. Solve using EES

Solution:
Total mass = Initial mass + mass added = (080x1) + (080x1x3) = 80+ 240 = 320 kg

Volume = 40 𝑚3
Pressure after adding CO2 in container = 40 bar

Part # a:
Since we have to plot graph between specific volume and leaked mass, we will give
values of leaked mass and calculate specific volume by following equation:

𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒
(𝐼𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 − 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑑 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠)

 EES graph:
Following graphs was gained when values were stimulated on EES:

Discussion:
Its is noticed from graph leaked mass is increased, then mass in the container decreases
because in denominator (mass-leaked mass). As specific volume is volume per mass remained
in the container, so mass and specified volume have inverse relation then the magnitude of
specific volume will increase by the increase of leaked mass because the fix volume i.e., 40
𝑚3 , will be divided by a smaller number i.e., mass remaining in the container.

Part # b:
Since we have to plot graph between pressure and leaked mass, we will give values of
leaked mass and calculate pressure by following equation:
Pressure = (Initial mass – leaked mass)

 EES graph:

 Discussion:
Its is obvious from graph if leaked mass is increased, it means the mass remaining in
container is decreased. So the increase in leaked mass will decrease mass inside the
container hence pressure decreasing

Part # c:
Since we have to plot graph between pressure and specific volume, we will calculate
values of calculate specific by following equation:
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒
(𝐼𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 − 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑘𝑒𝑑 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠)
And then we will calculate pressure by the equation:
1
𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒

 EES graph:

 Discussion:

The specific volume will grow as the leaked mass increases, as mentioned in part a, as the mass
inside the container decreases and the material leaking out increases. But as the mass remained in
the container decreases by time, it will decrease the pressure i.e., pressure decreases by the
increase in leaked volume as discussed in part b. Now that we have put all of this information
together, we can say that a gas will decrease pressure inside a container as its specific volume
increases.
