Purpose of PAKnotes
Knowledge can be managed in your KINGDOM project using PAKnotes. PAKnotes are currently
available in 2dPAK, 3dPAK, 2d/3dPAK, and EarthPAK components of the KINGDOM software.
PAKnotes can be used as interpretation aides and reminders that are associated with Base Map
and Vertical Seismic Display windows, or the Project Tree.
New PAKnotes can be created in a project and linked to an external file or to a web page.
PAKnotes can be displayed in two different states: the iconized state or the expanded state.
Iconized PAKnotes are represented by icons and are not readable. An expanded PAKnote is
displayed in a text box and is readable.

Tutorial Data Set

This tutorial uses the Sooner.tks project, which can be downloaded from the Demo Data Sets CD
delivered with your KINGDOM software installation CD. Open the Sooner folder to access the
Sooner.tks project. You can substitute a data set of your choice and run the tutorial with that data
set, however your results will differ from the PAKnotes results described in this tutorial.

Two Parts of PAKnotes: Application and Object

Two factors are involved in the characterization and definition of a PAKnote: the Application and
the Object.
The application is the software or file type that contains the PAKnote knowledge. The object is
the project item to which a PAKnote is related.
Following is a list of file types that are available in the PAKnotes Templates folder, and that can
be used to create a PAKnote. A file type can be selected from the list of recognized file types in
the PAKnotes Management dialog box (Figure 1).
1. Bitmap Picture (.bmp)
2. Excel Worksheet (*.xls).
3. IndexCard Word6.0-95 (.doc)
4. PAKnotes Plain Text (.txt)
5. PowerPoint Presentation (*.ppt).
6. Rich Text (.rtf)
7. SMT Plain Text (*.txt).
8. Wave Sound (.wav)
9. Word Document (.doc)
When you are creating PAKnotes, the application that launches corresponds to the file type
selected from the list of Recognized file types in the PAKnotes Management dialog box.
PAKnotes can be associated with specific objects in the project that are present and displayed on
the current Base Map window, or in a Vertical Display window.
These objects include:
• Horizons
• Faults

KINGDOM 8.4 3
Starting PAKnotes

• Grids
E
• Surveys, including Slices, Cross sections, Inlines, Crosslines, and Arbitrary lines X
I
• Boreholes T

Tip: When you create a PAKnote for a borehole, zoom in and magnify the area around the
point where you want to attach the PAKnote. This is especially important when
associating PAKnotes with deviated wells.

• Formation Tops (Vertical Seismic Display windows only). The Z value of the PAKnote will
be measured depth (MD).
• Fault Cuts (Vertical Seismic Display windows only).

Tip: When you create a PAKnote for a Formation Top or a Fault Cut, zoom in and magnify the
area around the point where you want to attach the PAKnote.

• Points (X, Y, Z, or T location)

Tip: The point note coordinates may fall beyond the project boundaries.

• The Project Tree window (PT PAKnote).

Authorship of PAKnotes
PAKnotes are author-specific project items. Any author can view the public PAKnotes of any
other author listed in the Project Tree. You can make changes to another author’s PAKnotes, but
you cannot delete or reassociate the PAKnote, and you cannot move the anchor point for the
PAKnote. Private PAKnotes are viewable only by the author that created them. An author must
give a unique name to each PAKnote.
PAKnotes reside in the PAKnotes folder and subfolders in the Project Tree window as shown in
Figure 2. PAKnotes are saved into the main PAKnotes subfolder of the active author.

Figure 2 Project Tree Window showing PAKnotes Folder

Each author in a project has a PAKnotes folder in which that author’s PAKnotes reside.

PAKnotes Definitions
PAKnotes use the following terminology:
• Context - a view or display. When you double-click a PAKnote in the Project Tree window,
it is displayed in its context, which means it is displayed in either a Base Map or Vertical
Display window. The saved PAKnote context information includes the window, map or line
identification, scale, and the object association. Context PAKnotes may be displayed in either
the iconized or expanded state.
• Context-less - a PAKnote that cannot be viewed in a Base Map or Vertical Display window.
A context-less PAKnote is associated with the Project Tree and may only be displayed in a
window for the application that was used to create the PAKnote. Context-less PAKnotes may
not be displayed in either the iconized or expanded state.
• Internal - the PAKnote is created in the project directory, and saved in the PAKnotes folder
for the active author.
• External - the PAKnote is created and saved outside the project directory. For example, you
may save a PAKnote into a directory on your Local Disk (C:) that is unrelated to a specific
project.
• Iconized State - a displayed PAKnote is represented by an icon (refer to PAKnotes Icons) on
base map and vertical windows. This is not a readable state. The icon may be positioned at the

KINGDOM 8.4 5
Starting PAKnotes

anchor point, or away from the anchor point and connected to the anchor point with a line.
Expanded PAKnotes can be converted to the iconized state using the right mouse button E
menu. All PAKnotes, except Project Tree PAKnotes, can be displayed an iconized state.
X
I
• Expanded State - a displayed PAKnote is in a readable state in Base Map and Vertical T
Seismic Display windows. Classic style expanded PAKnotes contain a PAKnote title, as well
as object information in parentheses. The PAKnote title is separate from the PAKnote content.
Iconized PAKnotes can be converted to the expanded state using the right mouse button menu.
Expanded PAKnotes can be displayed in one of the three expansion styles – classic, simple,
and clear. Expanded PAKnotes are not editable. All PAKnotes, with the exception of Project
Tree PAKnotes, have an expanded state.
• Application State - is a PAKnote that is opened outside of the KINGDOM software in a
separate application window. For example, a PAKnote saved as an Excel.xls opens with Excel
at any time. Use normal Microsoft save procedures to save PAKnotes; however, copies are
written to the appropriate subfolders for internal PAKnotes. All PAKnotes have an application
state.
• Anchor Point - object or point (with coordinates) that is associated with a PAKnote.
Placement resolution for an anchor point is within one line and trace number for horizon and
survey PAKnotes; within one half of the bin spacing for grid, point, and fault PAKnotes, and
measured depth for borehole, fault cut, and formation top PAKnotes. Formation top and fault
cut PAKnotes should match the PAKnote Location and Association coordinate exactly;
borehole PAKnotes should match measured depths approximately (to within 200 ft). Time
coordinates should be within 10 milliseconds. A PAKnote may be positioned at the anchor
point, or away from the anchor point and connected to the anchor point with a line.
• Position Vector - the angle of the line that connects the PAKnote border to the association
object. The center of the PAKnote is used to calculate the vector. The position vector is
specific to that PAKnote.
• Association - a PAKnote is attached to an object.
• Disassociation - an associated PAKnote is converted to a Project Tree PAKnote. Any object
or point PAKnote can be disassociated using the Properties tab in the PAKnotes
Management dialog box (Project > PAKnotes Management). On the Properties tab, click
Associate, left click the anchor cursor in the Base Map window to open the Associate
PAKnote With dialog box, and then select Project Tree from the displayed list.
• Object PAKnote - a PAKnote that has an object association. It has a context, position, and
icon.
• Point PAKnote - is one that has a context and a position, but is not associated with an object.
These are PAKnotes for which a location is desired, but there is no object connection.
• PT PAKnote - a PAKnote that has no association other than the Project Tree. It has no
context, position, or icon, other than that appearing on the Project Tree. It is only available in
the application state.

Types of PAKnotes E
X
Following are types (categories) of PAKnotes: I
T
• New PAKnote—a PAKnote created directly on the base map or vertical display window
using the available applications. It is saved in a PAKnotes folder either within the active
author’s folder or project directory. Each new PAKnote will have a unique ID. The naming
protocol is PAKnote00000xxxxx, where the x’s represent the PAKnote ID. The file extension
is identical to the application type extension. When expanded, new PAKnotes are printable
along with the context window. The current displayed page is the one printed. It is also be
printable as a standalone file from its application window, in which it can be edited. These are
internal PAKnotes.
• File PAKnote; Linked—a PAKnote that is linked to the location of the original source file.
However, no copy is saved by the KINGDOM software. The PAKnote is separate from the
project and is stored anywhere the author wants. Only the path is preserved in KINGDOM.
These PAKnotes reflect any changes made to the source file outside of the KINGDOM
software. When expanded, linked file PAKnotes are printable along with the context window.
The current displayed page is the one printed. It is also printable as a standalone file from its
application window, in which it is edited. These are external PAKnotes.
• File PAKnote; Imported—a PAKnote that is copied from a source file using the import
option. A duplicate of the original source file is made and saved in a TKSNotes folder, either
within the active author’s folder or project directory. Each imported PAKnote has a unique ID.
The naming protocol is PAKnote00000xxxxx, where the x’s represent the PAKnote ID. The
file extension is identical to the source file application type extension. These PAKnotes do not
reflect any changes made to the source file outside the KINGDOM software. When expanded,
imported file PAKnotes are printable along with the context window. The current displayed
page is the one printed. It is also printable as a standalone file from its application window, in
which it can be edited. These are internal PAKnotes.
• Web PAKnote—a PAKnote created using a web site. Typical html web sites, as well as those
that display (*.doc) or (*.pdf) files may be used. In expanded form, these PAKnotes display
only the web site title. To view the web site, the PAKnote must be opened using the right
mouse button menu. When expanded, web PAKnote titles are printable along with the context
window. However, the entire PAKnote is printable as a standalone web site from the web
browser. These are external PAKnotes.

PAKnotes Icons
When Show as Icon is checked ON in the PAKnotes Management dialog box, PAKnotes are
represented as icons in the Project Tree and in Base Map and Vertical Seismic Display
windows.
