INTRODUCTION
The council of logistic management defines logistics as “that part of supply chain process
that plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective, forward and reverse flow and
storage of goods, services, and related information between the point of origin and the point
of consumption in order to meet customer requirement”. In ordinary language the same can
be defined as right product, at the right place, in right time, and in right condition. However
supply chain consists of all stages that are required to satisfy the customer request. It starts
from supplier passes through manufacturer, distribution, retailer and finally reaches the
customer. The supply chain management is the oversight of materials, information and
finances as they move in the process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer
to customer.
The emerging new technologies are creating strategic opportunities for the organizations
to build competitive advantages in various functional areas of management including
logistics and supply chain management. However the degree of success depends on the
selection of the right technology for the application, availability of proper organizational
infrastructure, culture and management policies. In logistics, information, communication
and automation technologies has substantially increased speed of identification, data
gathering, processing, analysis and transmission, with high level of accuracy and reliability.
Technology is a means to enhance business competitiveness and performance.
It plays a major role in success of supply chain by enhancing the overall effectiveness and
efficiency of the logistics system. In logistics many new technologies are used in developed
country while in India adoption process is very slow. However due to liberalization of the
Indian economy the competitive pressure is building up and the only option to face the
competition in to go in for technology enabled operations. The latest technologies being used
in logistics and supply chain management are segregated into Automatic
Identification Technology
Communication Technology
Information Technology
Logistics depends on a high quality level of management within the supply chain in order
to be effective. These logistics managers are in charge of purchasing goods and making sure
they’re transported correctly to their destinations. Logistics managers rely on advanced
information systems to manage and track materials, starting from when they’re first made in
the factory to when they’re sold in retail stores. Because of the increase in volume and
complexity that businesses face, information systems are the only way to accurately manage
the product flow within an organization. Information technology specialists are always
coming up with specialized solutions that are suitable for their company, like finding the right
goods to market or finding the right routes for their shipments (Business.com, 2013). That is
their job and they communicate with the logistics managers to accurately convey information
back and forth.
Businesses depend on shipping products and knowing where those products are at all
times. If a shipment has not arrived at its destination, their freight tracking system will let a
company know where their shipment was last scanned. The drivers transporting these goods
have it easy with information systems as well. With the use of GPS mapping software, a
driver can receive real time driving directions while heading towards their shipping
destination. Newer GPS software even allows drivers to get real time information regarding
the amount of traffic along their scheduled route. If their route is jammed with traffic then it
may suggest an alternative route with less traffic on it. This is a huge advantage for a
company’s transportation needs because businesses thrive on having items arrive within a
certain timeframe.
Sometimes though, the amount of items that needs to be shipped can be
overwhelming for a company to deal with. So, they’ll implement a third party logistics
system which outsources their transportation and logistics needs to other companies. It is no
surprise how businesses simply cannot afford to be without information technology in this
day and age.
The different role of IT in logistics and supply chain are:
1. Electronic Commerce
Electronic commerce includes electronic data interchange, e-mail, electronic fund transfers,
electronic publishing, image processing, electronic bulletin boards, shared databases and
magnetic/optical data capture.
EDI describes both the capability and practice of communicating information between two
organizations electronically instead of traditional form of mail, courier, & fax. The benefits of
EDI are:
4. Increased productivity.
6. Cost efficiency.
7. Competitive advantage.
8. Improved billing.
Bar coding is a sequence of parallel lines of different thickness with spaces in between. These
bars are nothing but the items of information in the codified form, which can be read with the
help of a scanner. The information printed in bar code includes country code, manufacturer
name, product details, date of manufacture, material content etc. These details are required at
user end for inventory management.
Bar Coding and Scanner has reduced paper work and processing time. It has increased
logistics system productivity through speed, accuracy and reliability.
4. SKU DIM:
This SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) DIM capturing is done by weight machine integration.
During previous years this was done manually and it was time consuming. Now with the help
of this DIM, length, width, height, weight of the consignment is measured without any much
hassle and moreover here we can avoid revenue leakage, because in our experience we have
seen users capturing wrong dimensions which lead to wrong calculation during billing.
5. RFID
RFID is an Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC) technology. RFID first
appeared in tracking and access applications during 1980. RFID-based systems allows for
non contact reading and are effective in manufacturing and other environment where bar
codes could not survive. These are used as an alternative to Barcodes to communicate the
inventory data to the reader via radio waves. RFID wirelessly exchanges information between
a tagged object and a reader. RFID has improved the ability of manufacturers to better
manage the inventory levels. It has improved the tracking, logistics and planning operations.
6. Case ID Capture
This ID is used to capture information on cases, where for each SKU, box case will be
defined with number of SKU units kept inside each unique product cases. In some cases
information will be flown and measured towards UOM which is mentioned as CASES.
7. Route Optimization
Truck routing, delivery scheduling and fleet management software solutions help hundreds of
private fleet and logistics operators to cut transportation costs every day – giving a fast return
on software investment.
New and growing logistics companies are quite apprehensive and skeptical about transport
management, claiming that it will only result in increased expenses that could eventually hurt
their business in the long run. This is a common misconception about GPS tracking.
• Improved productivity
Last mail delivery plays a vital role in SCM. Now days B2C transaction is increased and
every end customer expects the delivery on time. To active this, TAT service providers are
very key on delivery information capture and reflecting it in the online sites.
INTRODUCTION OF SCM
Supply chain management has a very important role to play within the organization because it
involves with the responsibility for predicting and satisfying end customers' demand back
through to the supplier and creates opportunities for the procurement professional to
contribute to the organization’s success. The objective of supply chain management is to
create the most value for the entire supply chain network, including the end-customer.
Successful supply chain management involves the coordination of activities within the firm
and between members of the supply chain. Within the organization, the supply chain refers to
a wide range of functional areas.
These include Supply Chain Management-related activities such as inbound and outbound
transportation, warehousing, and inventory control. Sourcing, procurement, and supply
management fall under the supply-chain umbrella, too. Forecasting, production planning and
scheduling, order processing, and customer service all are part of the process as well. Supply
Chain Managers have a vital role to play in managing cost, as they are in a position to
monitor and influence the whole cost base across the business and the supply chain .
Commercial Department of ALACRITY E-COMMERCE SOLUTION is one of the most
vital functional departments of the Company which deals with the supply chain activities of
ALACRITY E-COMMERCE SOLUTION. In order to keep all the businesses running
flawlessly, the dedicated and hardworking employees of this department maintain a good
liaison with the customers, both national and international. The Commercial Department is
consistently achieving the best prices for the products that they purchase, ensuring enormous
amount of cost savings for the company. It offers invincible professionalism and expertise in
the entire commercial activities of ALACRITY E-COMMERCE SOLUTION.
Supply Chain Management can be defined as the management of flow of products and
services, which begins from the origin of products and ends at the product’s consumption. It
also comprises movement and storage of raw materials that are involved in work in progress,
inventory and fully furnished goods.
The main objective of supply chain management is to monitor and relate production,
distribution, and shipment of products and services. This can be done by companies with a
very good and tight hold over internal inventories, production, distribution, internal
productions and sales.
In the above figure, we can see the flow of goods, services and information from the producer
to the consumer. The picture depicts the movement of a product from the producer to the
manufacturer, who forwards it to the distributor for shipment. The distributor in turn ships it
to the wholesaler or retailer, who further distributes the products to various shops from where
the customers can easily get the product.
Supply chain management basically merges the supply and demand management. It uses
different strategies and approaches to view the entire chain and work efficiently at each and
every step involved in the chain. Every unit that participates in the process must aim to
minimize the costs and help the companies to improve their long term performance, while
also creating value for its stakeholders and customers. This process can also minimize the
rates by eradicating the unnecessary expenses, movements and handling.
Here we need to note that supply chain management and supply chain event management are
two different topics to consider. The Supply Chain Event Management considers the factors
that may interrupt the flow of an effective supply chain; possible scenarios are considered
and accordingly, solutions are devised for them.
Every firm strives to match supply with demand in a timely fashion with the most efficient
use of resources. Here are some of the important goals of supply chain management −

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
According to Adaptive Theory in Distribution Network, the system become more reliable as
it involves using technology to automate, organize, automate and synchronize business
systems, procedures and processes. The process of automating logistics operations helps in
track and trace of shipment. This is done by installing track devices into the delivery vehicles
which enables someone in the office to track and trace the movement of the vehicles on the
road. This makes it easy to manage the fleet, which is the position, and the speed of the
trucks.
Berg Insight’s (2002) defines a fleet management solution as a vehicle-based system that
incorporates satellite positioning, data logging and communication to a back office
application. Fleet management systems and solutions go back several decades which started
with on-board vehicle computers in the 1980s which later were connected to various satellite
and terrestrial wireless networks. Nowadays mobile networks can provide ubiquitous online
connectivity at a reasonable cost and speed. Mobile computing technology delivers very high
performance in terms of high quality, as well as excellent usability. When all these
components combine they enable the delivery of vehicle management, transport
management, driver management and mobile workforce management applications linking
vehicles and enterprise IT systems. According to Wong et al, (2009), Fleet management
function coordinates, oversees and fAlacrity E-Commerce Solutionlitates various transport
and transport related activities, the management of light vehicle fleets used in the
transportation of people and light cargo; possibly motorbikes and other equipment such as
generators and warehouse handling equipment.
The theoretical starting point for our analysis is the wellestablished literature on new
technology adoption. This literature points to delays in the adoption of new technologies and
differences in adoption rates across firms, industries and countries (Reinganum, 2008). To
understand the adoption and diffusion of IT as a new technology it is therefore essential to
uncover the factors that explain this delay and the variation in the rates of its adoption. The
existing theoretical models focus on a number of factors explaining this delay and the
variation in the adoption rates including uncertainty about the characteristics of the new
technology.
Instrumental theory offers the most widely accepted view of technology. It is based on the
common sense idea that technologies are "tools" standing ready to serve the purposes of their
users. Technology is deemed "neutral," without evaluative content of its own. However, what
does the notion of the "neutrality" of technology actually mean? The concept usually implies
at least four points. First technology, as pure instrumentality, is indifferent to the variety of
ends it can be employed to achieve (Kenneth & Laudon, 2007). Thus, the neutrality of
technology is merely a special case of the neutrality of instrumental means, which are only
contingently related to the substantive values they serve
This conception of neutrality is familiar and self-evident. Secondly, technology also appears
to be indifferent with respect to politics, at least in the modern world, and especially with
respect to capitalist and socialist societies. A hammer is a hammer, a steam turbine is a steam
turbine, and such tools are useful in any social context. In this respect, technology appears to
be quite different from traditional legal or religious institutions, which cannot be readily
transferred to new social contexts because they are so intertwined with other aspects of the
societies in which they originate (Capgemini, 2008).
The transfer of technology, on the contrary, seems to be inhibited only by its cost. Thirdly,
the socio-political neutrality of technology is usually attributed to its "rational" character and
the universality of the truth it embodies. Technology, in other words, is based on verifiable
causal propositions. Insofar as such propositions are true, they are not socially and politically
relative but, like scientific ideas, maintain their cognitive status in every conceivable social
context. Hence, what works in one society can be expected to work just as well in another.
Lastly, the universality of technology also means that the same standards of measurement can
be applied in different settings (Bitner, Brown, & Meuter, 2000).
Given this understanding of technology; the only rational stance is unreserved commitment
to its employment. Of course, we might make a few exceptions and refuse to use certain
devices out of deference to moral or religious values. Reproductive technologies are a case in
point. Even if one believes that contraception, abortion, test tube babies are valueneutral in
them, and, technically considered, can only be judged in terms of efficiency, one might
renounce their use out of respect for the sacredness of life (Bitner, et al., 2000).
Despite the common sense appeal of instrumental theory, a minority view denies the
neutrality of technology. Substantive theory, best known through the writings of Jacques
Ellul and Martin Heidegger, argues that technology constitutes a new type of cultural system
that restructures the entire social world as an object of control. This system is characterized
by an expansive dynamic, which ultimately overtakes every prêt-technological enclave and
shapes the whole of social life (Gray, Matear & Matheson, 2000).
Ellul makes that link explicit, arguing that the "technical phenomenon" has become the
defining characteristic of all modern societies regardless of political ideology. "Technique,"
he asserts, "has become autonomous. Heidegger agrees that technology is relentlessly
overtaking us. We are engaged, he claims, in the transformation of the entire world, ourselves
included, into "standing reserves," raw materials to be mobilized in technical processes.
Heidegger asserts that the technical restructuring of modern societies is rooted in a nihilistic
will to power, a degradation of man and Being to the level of mere objects (Gray, et al.,
2000).
A good starting point to a study of this nature must be a discussion of the various concept and
terminologies that formed pillar of this work and give it a form. In line with the position held
by (Lee &Wang, 2001) the conceptual framework of your study, the system of concepts,
assumptions, expectation, beliefs, and theories that supports and informs your research is a
key part of your design.

RATIONAL OF STUDY
Supply chain management (SCM) has become one of the most popular concepts
within management in general and within logistics in particular. There is an overall
agreement within the scientific community that SCM is a very complex management concept.
Despite twenty years of ongoing research, academia has still not agreed on common
terminology. This resulted in specific research endeavors that try to reduce the complexity by
offering specific structure.
The findings of the study are based on the information provided and data provided at particular
area. Efforts will be made to make the study as accurate as possible, 100% accuracy cannot be
claimed because of the following reasons: –
Sample to be drawn by Quota sampling, so the possibilities of sample error cannot be ruled
out.
Time was the biggest constraint but all effort was made to get all the relevant information
required for this study.
Some of the sampling and non-sampling errors may creep into the study.

CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
The evolution of the development of this concept was considered and three main stages the
80s, the formulation of the concept and the idea of coordinating the actions of companies
within the chain; 90s, the idea of integrating key business functions, the idea of focusing on
the needs of end customers and other kinds of competition - between chains, and not between
individual firms, the final separation of the concept of logistics from SCM; supply chain
management concept transformation. In our opinion, the main determinants of SCM
development will be the concept of dynamic abilities and focus on the value of the products
and services provided.
Dynamic abilities require proactive and more flexible competitive behavior, of both
individual firms and the supply chain as a whole. By value approach, we understand the
principle of maximizing customer value in the face of increasing competition. One way to
add value to customers is to co-create that value or provide a wide range of additional
services to the base product.
This approach, however, also requires a streamlined supply chain management mechanism,
proactive and flexible company management behavior. All these changes pose new
challenges for SCM researchers
