CASE

ANALYSIS

Jacob is a trainee accountant in his second year of training within a small practice. A more senior
trainee has been on sick leave, and Jacob is due to go on study leave. He has been told by his
manager that, before he goes on leave, he must complete some complicated reconciliation work. The
deadline suggested appears unrealistic, given the complexity of the work.

He feels that he is not sufficiently experienced to complete the work alone. He would need additional
supervision to complete it to the required standard, and his manager appears unable to offer the
necessary support. If he tries to complete the work within the proposed timeframe but fails to meet the
expected quality, he could face repercussions on his return from study leave. He feels slightly
intimidated by his manager, and also feel pressured to do what he can for the practice in what are
challenging times.

Required:
a. Give at least three (3) key fundamental principles affected in the case above. Explain your answer.

Integrity: If Jacob attempt to complete the work that is out of his abilities without supervision this
will ruin his integrity even if he succeeds the risk embedded to what he did will not be forgotten if
found out. This also talks about how open and honest can he be about the situation.

Professional competence and due care: It’s about can Jacob complete the work within the given
time and achieve quality output if not his professional knowledge and skills will seem doubtful.

Professional behavior: This one is a bit hard to deal with, If Jacob refuse to perform the work it
might damage his reputation and If he attempts to perform the work this still affect his reputation
negatively.

b. If you were Jacob, what possible courses of action are you going to take concerning the
fundamental principles affected?

First of all, I will follow the code of ethics for accountant’s integrity must be maintained and I must
secure my manager’s reputation as well and show my commitment to work. It would be ethically
wrong to attempt to perform the work without competence because it might lead to poor quality
output which will greatly affect my reputation as well as my manager’s.

I will discuss the issue with the manager and client if its possible to extend the deadline until the
senior comes back from sick leave to perform the work with expected quality. If not, I will discuss
the issue with my manager and ask if it’s possible to assign someone who can supervise my work.
