MATH 1201

ASSIGNMENT 2

1. (a)

Solving for x in the top equation

3y + 4x = 12

Subtract 3y from both sides.

4x=12−3y

Divide both sides by 4.

4/4x=12/4 −3y/4

X =3−3y/4

Divide 12−3y by 4.

x= −3/4y +3

No need to solve for y because you will still get the same straight line. Check y = −4/3x +4.

Solving for x in the top equation

-6y = 8x + 1

Swap sides so that all variable terms are on the left hand side.

8x+1=−6y

Subtract 1 from both sides.

8x = −6y −1

Divide both sides by 8.

8/8 x = −6/8y −1

X = −6/8y −1

Divide −6y−1 by 8.

x=−3/4y −1 /8
Using Desmos graph, plot both equations for x,

We can see from the graph that the equations form parallel lines.

b.

Solving for x in the top equation

3y + x = 12

Subtract 3y from both sides.

X = 12−3y

Solving for x in the top equation

-y = 8x +1

Swap sides

8x+1=−y

Subtract 1 from both sides.

8x = −y −1

Divide both sides by 8.

8/8x = −y/8 −1/8

X = (−y −1}/8

Using Desmos graph, plot both equations for x,

We can see from the graph that the equations form neither parallel nor perpendicular lines.

c.

Solving for x in the top equation

4x – 7y = 10

Adding 7y to both sides.

4x =10 + 7y

Divide both sides by 4.

(4/4)x = 7/4y+10/4

X = 7/4y + 5/2
Solving for x in the top equation

7x + 4y = 1

Add 4y to both sides.

7x = 1 + 4y

Rearrange equation to standard form.

7x = 4y +1

Divide both sides by 7.

7/7x = {4y +1}/7

X = {4y +1}/7

Using Desmos graph, plot both equations for x,

We can see from the graph that the equations form neither parallel nor perpendicular lines.

2. The height of the building

At the top of the building t = 0
If we substitute this in the function
h(t)= -4.9(t2) + 24t +8
h(0) = -4.9*0 + 24*0 + 8
h=8

The height of the building is 8 meters.

The time it takes to reach the maximum height from the top of the building.

From the equation above

Y = ax^2 + bx +c

Where a = -4.9

B = 24

t = -b/2a

= -(24)/ 2* -4.9

= 2.448

t≈ 2.5 seconds

The maximum height reached by the ball

h(t)= -4.9(t)^2 + 24(t) + 8

= -4.9 (2.5)^2 + 24 (2.5) +8

= -30.625 + 60 + 8

hmax= 37.38

The maximum height reached is 37.38 meters

These can be confirmed from the graph in Desmos calculator.

Revenue for 100 shops

R(100) = 100 * 200

= 20000

The total revenue income for all the shops is $20,000

If one more shop is added to the market, then we have 101 shops and income reduces by $5

So average drops to $195

R(101) = 101 x 195

= 19,659.

Revenue will be $19,659.per day

If 1 sop is removes revenue raises by $5

R(99) = 99* 205 = 20,295.

Revenue will be $20,295.per day

Revenue for 99 shops has the optimal revenue and so I recommend the Revenue department to

adopt this.
