Working at Height SOP.

Work at height’ means work in any place where, if there were no precautions in place, a person
could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury – THIS IS GENERALLY ANY CHANGE IN HEIGHT
THAT IS MORE THAN A COMFORTABLE STEP UP OR DOWN

Compulsory
High visibility clothing -
Steel toe capped boots with steel mid sole - EN345 (with 200J toe caps).
Hearing protection – Ear plugs - BS EN 352-2:2002, or Earmuffs - BS EN 352-1:200.
ALWAYS CONSIDER FIRST – DO I NEED TO WORK AT HEIGHT AND CAN IT BE AVOIDED?
IF IT IS UNAVOIDABLE – ALWAYS ENSURE ALL WORK AT HEIGHT EQUIPMENT IS IN
GOOD
CONDITION, CERTIFIED AS SUCH BY A COMPETENT PERSON, AND IS USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH
MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS.

HAZARDS INVOLVED:
Falls from height.
Being struck by falling objects.
Moving Vehicles & Mobile Equipment.
Moving Pedestrians.
Slippery surfaces.

Fragile or uneven surfaces.
Compressed Air.
Sharp Objects.
Poor maintenance of access equipment (e.g. ladders, steps, scaffolds).
Lifting of Materials and Tools - Manual Handling.
Falling objects (e.g. tools, equipment, parts).
Faulty/Damaged work equipment – Electrocution.
Inappropriate use of scissor lift.
Inappropriate use of ladders/stepladders.
Inexperience, Lack of training.
Use of lifting round ropes/slings as an anker points.

RISKS INVOLVED
Fatality from falling from height.
Crushing injuries from collision with vehicles, mobile plant or falling objects.
Trauma injuries from collision with pedestrians.
Head injuries.
Industrial deafness or tinnitus to staff within the factory if exposed to >83dba noise for prolonged
periods without hearing protection measures.
Body suspension trauma from falling from height.
Muscular Skeletal injuries from lifting/moving objects activities.
Electrical Shock.

METHOD
AVOID WORKING AT HEIGHT IF RESONABLY PRACTICABLE.
Aways assess your working environment and ensure its safe to carry out your task you Never put
yourself or other staff at risk.
Tasks only undertaken by trained and competent persons.
Working at height Permit MUST be filled by employee and signed by workshop manager when LOBO
platforms, scissor lifts or fall arrest systems will be used to perform task.
Anyone working on top of units must be connected to an anti-fall harness Fall Arrest System.
Only relevant beam clamps can be used as an anker points for fall arrest system.
LOBO towers - must be erected and inspected only by qualified person. Inspection must be
performed before use and recorded in LOBO Platform Check Sheet.
SCISOR LIFTS - Only to be used by trained staff. Scissor Lift pre use check must be performed and
recorded in Scissor Lift Check Sheet.
All working at height equipment (e.g. ladders, scissor lifts, LOBO platforms, fall arrest systems) MUST
be inspected before each use.
Any broken or damaged equipment must be reported immediately and quarantined.
All users to have had relevant training by a competent person on the equipment they are to use or
Licenced for Scissor lifts, LOBO towers & Fall Arrest System.
When using any equipment for working at height all users must assess whether they have clear
access and egress from required area and whether the floor area is safe to work from.
Area where scissor lifts used to perform the task MUST be secured with barriers to prevent
unauthorised pedestrian access.
