3. GPS (Global Positioning System): GPS is like a super-smart

Most maps have nine features, as shown in the map below which help you understand
and read them better.

is shown.
2. Compass rose: it shows directions: north, south, east, and west.
3. Symbols: they represent such items as capital cities and natural resources. The
map legend explains what the symbols mean.
4. Legend or key: it lists and explains the symbols and colours used on the maps.
5. Lines of longitude: These are imaginary lines that measure distances east and
west of the prime meridian.
6. Lines of latitude: These are imaginary lines that measure distances north and
south of the equator.
7. Scale: it can be used to see the distance between two locations on a map.
8. Labels: they indicate the names of cities, landforms, and bodies of water.
9. Colours: they represent a variety of information on a map. The map legend
explains what the colours mean.

The Americas are like a big part of our Earth, and


they are known as the New World! There are two
main parts: North America and South America, and
they have cool islands too. All together, they cover
8.3% of Earth's surface. People usually think of
Central America as part of North America.

When we say "American," it often means someone


or something from the United States, but it can
also mean anyone or anything from anywhere in the
Americas.

A long time ago, people traveled from Asia and maybe Oceania to come live in the
Americas during a really cold time called the Ice Age. They were kind of separated
from the rest of the world until Europeans came between the 10th and 15th
centuries.

The first people in the Americas were like explorers, following big animals like
mammoths. Some might have even come on icy paths along the northern Pacific coast.

As time went on, the cultures of the first people here turned into awesome
civilizations, like the Iroquois in North America and the Quechuas in South America.

PART 2 – CULTURAL AND POLITICAL ORGANIZATION

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic consisting of two main
islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, and a number of smaller islands.

What does and archipelago mean?

An archipelago is like a team of islands that stick together in the water. Picture a group of
islands hanging out as friends in the sea. Sometimes, they're formed by volcanoes or other
cool processes in the ocean. So, an archipelago is basically a bunch of islands having a big
water party, and they can be made in different ways.

They are administered as a self-governing overseas


territory of the United Kingdom from Port
Stanley, the capital and largest city, on East
Falkland. Argentina, however, claims the islands,
calling them by their Spanish name, Islas
Malvinas (and the derived Malvinas
Islands in English) and considers them part of
the Tierra del Fuego Province.

Why do we call them “the Falkland Islands” today?

A long time ago, in 1690, a captain named John Strong from England arrived
at the Falkland Islands. He found a place between the two main islands and
decided to give it a special name. He called it "Falkland Sound" after his
friend, Viscount Falkland, who was an important leader in the British navy.
So, the islands got their name because Captain John Strong wanted to honor
his friend.

 An independent state is like its own boss. It's a country that can make its own rules,
decisions, and be friends with other countries. Think of it as a place that runs itself.

Independent Territory:

 An independent territory is a part of a bigger country that gets to make some of its
own rules, but it still follows the bigger country's main decisions. It's a bit like having
your own room where you can decide how to organize things, but you still listen to your
parents for big stuff.

Additionally, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires - Buenos Aires City (Ciudad Autónoma de
Buenos Aires) functions as a federal district and is the capital of the country.

Argentinian Regions
 Argentine Northwest: Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca
 Gran Chaco: Formosa, Chaco, Santiago del Estero
 Mesopotamia (or Littoral): Misiones, Entre Ríos, Corrientes
 Cuyo: San Juan, La Rioja, Mendoza, San Luis
 Pampas: Córdoba, Santa Fe, La Pampa, Buenos Aires
 Patagonia: Río Negro, Neuquén, Chubut, Santa Cruz, Tierra del Fuego

Nevertheless, there are different approaches to the Argentine regions. The Pampas are
often separated into Humid Pampa and Dry Pampas, and sometimes in Llanura
Pampeana and Sierras Pampeanas. Other geographical analyses include other defined regions,
being Comahue and Chaco Central among the most common.
Regardless of the regions system used, some provinces are shared by more than one region.
For instance, Southwestern Santiago del Estero is sometimes considered part of
the Sierras area, or even the Humid Pampa, while the Southern part of La Pampa is
sometimes called Dry Pampa and included in Patagonia. Finally, La Rioja is sometimes
considered part of Cuyo region instead of the Northwest.

1. Growing Crops: In rural Argentina, people grow


lots of different crops like soybeans, wheat,
corn, and sunflower seeds.

2. Taking Care of Cattle: There are also lots of


cows in rural areas. People take care of these
cows, and it's called cattle ranching. They use the cows to produce beef, which is a big
part of the food they eat.

3. Making Dairy Products: Some places focus on making things like milk, cheese, and
butter. It's like having farms that provide us with tasty dairy products.

4. Growing Fruits and Vegetables: In certain areas, they grow yummy fruits like apples,
pears, and oranges, as well as vegetables like tomatoes and peppers.

5. Making Wine: Argentina is famous for making delicious wine. In some rural places,
they have vineyards where they grow grapes to make this special drink.

6. Taking Care of Forests: Some areas are like big forests, and people make sure to use
the trees wisely. They might cut some trees for wood but make sure to plant new ones
to keep the forests healthy.

7. Making Renewable Energy: In a few places, they use the power of the wind and sun to
create energy. It's like having big windmills and solar panels that help create
electricity in a clean and green way.

 Rural areas

A rural area is an open space of land that has few homes or other buildings, and not very
many people.

A rural areas population density is very low. Many people live in a city, or urban area. Their
homes and businesses are located very close to one another. In a rural area, there are fewer
people, and their homes and businesses are located far away from one another.

Agriculture is the primary industry in most rural areas. Most people live or work
on farms or ranches. Hamlets, villages, towns, and other small settlements are in or
surrounded by rural areas.

Wildlife is more frequently found in rural areas than in cities because of the absence of
people and buildings. In fact, rural areas are often called the country because residents can
see and interact with the country's native wildlife.

Throughout the world, more people live in rural areas than in urban areas. This has been
changing rapidly, however. Urbanization is happening all over the world.

Shift to Cities
People are migrating to urban areas for many reasons, including agricultural
technology, industrial technology, and the hope of changing ones economic circumstances.

Agricultural technology has decreased the need for agricultural workers.


Improved transportation, tools, fertilizer, and
genetically modified crops mean fewer farm
workers harvest more food. This decreased need
for farm employment drives many farm workers
into cities in search of jobs.

Industrial technology has created many jobs


unique to urban areas. Developing countries often
have resource-based economies, meaning most
people make their living from
agriculture, timber, mining, or other harvesting

of natural resources. These natural resources are most often located in rural areas. As
developing countries expand the use of industrial technology, they often shift their focus to
a service-based economy. Service-based economies use industrial technology to
provide finished goods and services to people inside and outside their countries.

Native people in Argentina

In the past, indigenous people in Argentina faced many challenges. Their lands were taken
away, and they had to follow a different way of life and religion. They were treated unfairly,
and their traditional ways of living were disrupted. Even today, some people believe there are
no indigenous people left or that they live just like everyone else. This has led some
indigenous people to hide their identity to avoid discrimination. Sadly,
hurtful words and stereotypes are still used against them. It's
important to treat everyone with respect and understanding.

Indigenous people in Argentina face challenges in different aspects


of their lives:

Language:

 Many indigenous people speak their native languages, but some are losing their mother
tongue, especially among those who moved to cities. Efforts are being made to promote
bilingual education, but there's still work to be done.

Religion:

 Despite various attempts to change their beliefs, indigenous


communities maintain their ancestral religions. Some have
even blended their beliefs with other religions, like the Kom
(Toba) who created their own churches.

Rural Communities:

 In the Chaco region, where many indigenous groups live, deforestation and cattle
farming are causing problems. The indiscriminate cutting of trees and selling of state
lands disrupts their traditional ways of life, affecting their food sources and the
environment.

 In the central-south region, the Mapuche, Teheulche, and Rankulche people face
constant land invasion and theft. Multinational corporations are also pressuring
small local producers, making it harder for indigenous communities to recover
their lands.

and harming the health of indigenous people, especially children and the elderly.

Despite these challenges, it's essential to support and respect indigenous communities and
work together for positive change. Every November, we observe Native American Heritage
Month to honor the history, contributions, cultures and lives of Native Americans.
