CHAPTER I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Throughout history, there has been a strong emphasis on effective

and efficient time management, which has also been regarded as the key to

success. Frederick Winslow Taylor proposed using time management to

analyze time and motion studies of employees in order to reduce time wasting

and unproductive work. In this competitive era, organizations and directors

place a premium on finding time management tools in order to achieve peak

performance. It is also recommended that students begin practicing time

management as early as possible in their academic careers. Time

management has also been defined as a type of self-management that places

a strong emphasis on time in determining what activities to perform and how

to perform them.

Time management is defined as "behavior" when performing goal-

directed activities with the goal of using time efficiently. Time attitudes, long-

term planning, and short-term planning are the three basic surfaces of time

management behavior. Time attitude is a positive or negative attitude toward

the present, future, and past that has been linked to academic achievement,

particularly in scientific subjects. The concept of handling everyday tasks for

extended periods of time while adhering to the goals set for significant dates

is referred to as long-term planning competence. Planning for day-to-day

activities or tasks within a day or week, on the other hand, is short-term

planning. Many studies have found a link between higher academic

achievement and effective time management as students develop strategies

for meeting competing demands. Curriculums in higher education institutes

are designed in such a way that students' workload peaks and troughs,

requiring them to manage their work-life balance, often without the support of

the institution. Non-cognitive personal behavior, i.e., students' perspectives on

time management, is also an effective predictor of educational achievement

because poor time management skills make it difficult for students to plan

their studies, causing anxiety and agitation at the assessment time, which

usually occurs at the end of the semester.

Previous studies have determined that time management has a

positive effect. Time management abilities have been shown to improve

student learning and outcomes. A number of studies have found that time

management has a positive impact. Time management skills have been

shown to have a positive impact on student learning and outcomes and stated

that students' ability to successfully manage their time is the benchmark for

developing better study habits as well as success strategies. Individuals can

use time management to structure and control their activities.

This study is based on the existentialism philosophy, which is learner-

centered and provides students with guidance in their studies. Learners are

self-responsible for their academics because they seek guidance from their

teachers but make decisions and manage all activities themselves. This study

is based on the pickle jar theory, which is a modern and relevant theory of

time management. According to this theory, humans should create a balance

of activities and things while effectively integrating time management

techniques.
Statement of the Problem

Operational Definition of Terms

Time management is the act of setting up and preparing a schedule

on how to split your time between several pursuits.

Academic performance is the extent to which student has attained

their short or long-term educational goals.

HUMSS is a utilization of experiences and abilities in the examination

and inquiry of human problems by analyzing its behavior and social

changes through empirical, analytical, and critical method techniques is

what strands teach students.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literatures

This chapter contains the related literature on time management

and academic performance of Humanities and Social Sciences students this

chapter also helps to add more information that is relevant to the present

study.

TIME MANAGEMENT

According to Brian Tracy (2016). Your success or failure as an executive

will depend more on your capacity for time management than on any other

skill. The only nonrenewable and no replaceable resource for achievement is

time. Your prized possession, It cannot be restored once gone and cannot be

saved. Everything you need to do costs time, and the more efficiently you

spend it, the more you'll be able to do and reap the results.

For the best possible health and personal effectiveness, time

management is crucial. Your level of inner peace, harmony, and mental riches

is greatly influenced by how much you feel in control of your time and your

life. Being "out of control" of your time is the major source of stress, anxiety,

and depression. The better you can organize and control the critical events of

your life, the better you will sleep and the more you get did.

Planning and exercise control over the amount of time spent on tasks

is the practice of time management, which aims to boost effectiveness,

efficiency, and productivity. Every student should be able to manage their time

well in order to accomplish their objectives. According to the experts, time

management provides a lot of advantages, but if it is neglected, the pupils will

suffer as a result.

Based on the study of Ivy Wigmore (2015). Time management is the

coordination of people's tasks and activities to maximize the effectiveness of

their efforts. Elements include organization, planning and scheduling to best

take advantage of the time available to the individual, while also taking into

account that individual's particular situation and relevant characteristics.

According to the study of Adebayo (2015). Time management is a set

of practices that work together to help you get more value out of your time

with the aim of improving the quality of your life. Students most often do not

utilize their time judiciously as expected to attain their goals.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Based on the study of McGregory, C (2015). Time management is the

process of planning and exercising conscious control of the time spent on

specific activities to work smarter than harder. It is a juggling act of various

things that help you increase efficiency and strike a better work-life balance.

Improving your time management at work allows you to enhance your

performance and achieve your desired goals with less effort and more

effective strategies. Effective time management is associated with greater

academic performance and lower levels of anxiety in students without the

development of effective habits, such as motivation, metacognition, and self-

regulation, students are likely to perform poorly and find it difficult to improve
future performance. Students most often do not utilize their time judiciously as

expected to attain their goals. Hypotheses were generated to identify the

constraints of time management among students. The results revealed that

procrastination, prioritization and planning were strong indices that affected

the students’ academic performance in relation to time management. It was

strongly recommended that students have to be conscious of time in

performing their academic activities so that the level of their academic

performance can be high.

HUMSS

According to Kendra Cherry (2022). Self-esteem is a person’s overall

self-worth or personal value; it is how people appreciate and love themselves,

which is often seen as a personality trait. This also means being stable and

enduring; people who have low self-esteem cannot take up the world filled

with optimism and determination or have difficulties in interacting with other

people to help develop themselves by determining the benefits of choosing

the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand to develop the self-

esteem of the students through different activities that HUMSS offers.

This study aims to determine the effects of difficulties in speaking using

the English language in the academic performances of the selected Grade 12

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand students. Eloquence in

speaking using the English language is fluent, elegant, and forcible or

persuasive speaking. Thus, this study is necessary for Grade 12 HUMSS

Strandstudents because most of the academic subjects in HUMSS include

public speaking, especially on reports and speech.

CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter includes the methods used and the research design that

includes the locale study, the participants, research instruments, data

collection procedure, and data analysis technique.

Research Design

The researchers will make use the quantitative research design with

structured survey questionnaires; it is design for gathering information. This

design is chosen by the researcher because this is the most appropriate

design to meet the objectives of the study which is to determine the Extent of

Time Management and its Implication the Academic Performance of

Humanities and Social Sciences Students.Gravetter & Forzano (2018) stated

that survey is one of the descriptive research. Survey research is used to

have description of a certain group of individuals.

Population and Sampling

Before gathering the sample, the researchers will ascertain the

population of the study will be the students of Kapingkong National High

School.

Sampling

In this study, the researchers choose purposive sampling. According

to Sharma G. (2017) Purposive sampling reflects a group of sampling

techniques that rely on the judgment of the researcher when it comes to

selecting the unit (e.g, people, case, organization, events, piece of data) that

are studied. In this research, the sample that will take part in the research will

be the HUMSS students from Kapingkong National High School.

Data Gathering Procedures

In order to gather data for this study, research-made questionnaires

will be used as the instrument. The questionnaires were given out to the

respondents, and it will be the researcher’s responsibility to make it easier to

get the answers. Following the data collection by the researchers, the papers

will undergo interpretation and analysis as well as verification.

Data Analysis Technique

The data from the interview describing the study, the researchers will

interpret the recorded answer and will be categorized by observing the

commonalities of the response of their feelings, struggles, and their hopes

and desires as a student. The researchers will interpret and analyze the

gathered data through the participants perspective.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical consideration is a collection of principles and values that

should be followed while doing human affairs. Bhasin, H. (2020). To comply

with ethical considerations in conducting research all participants provided

verbal consent to be interviewed and to participate in the research. The

participants who were chosen to be the subject of the study as well as those

who wanted to voluntarily participate in the study were approached by the

researchers. Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory

Medicine. (2018). States that Informed consent is a process in which a human

subject who is to participate in research needs to give his or her consent after

being properly informed of the expected benefits as well as the potential harm

of the research that will be performed. In this study verbal consent was

deemed appropriate. Elcomblus Media, Inc. (2020, April 14)

Research Instrument

A questionnaire is a type of research tool that asks a set of pertinent

questions of respondents in order to gather information. The questionnaires

will be available to the researchers so they can collect the necessary data.

The respondents could simply read and complete the questionnaires at their

convenience by using these tools. This equipment will be used since it is

quicker and simpler.
