Passive voice

Passive voice is used in English when you want to emphasize the receiver of the
action in a sentence. It is very common in newspaper reports, as the headlines
often omit the doer (the agent) of an action. The voice of the verb can be treated
as passive or active, depending on whether we focus on the subject/agent (doer)
or the object/patient (receiver). Look at the examples:
Active voice (agent subject + verb + patient object)
A. The dog ate my cake.
Passive voice (patient subject + auxiliary verb to be + main verb in past participle
+ agent object)
B. My cake was eaten by the dog.

➢ Rules for using the passive voice


You can use the passive voice for all verb tenses, as long as you match the
necessary structure. The passive voice is formed by

Object + the verb to be + main verb in the past participle+ by + subject


Don’t Forget! Personal pronouns change into object
pronouns

I > me
You > you SHE bake a cake.

He > him A cake is baked by HER.

She> her
HE played a guitar.
It > it
A guitar was playd by HIM.
We> us
They> them
