1) Someone paces back and forth in the room. They travel 2 meters from their original
position to the door, then go back to their original position. They do it for 1 hour and 12
minutes. If their speed is 300 meters per hour, what is their magnitude of displacement?
(∆x = 2 meters)
*This is an example of a misconception: distance traveled is not the same as the
magnitude of displacement. If the question was asking for distance traveled, the answer
would be 360 meters.

2) Acceleration: Neglecting air resistance, calculate the position of the rock 2.00 seconds
after it is thrown, if its initial velocity is 13 m/s. Assume g = 9.8 m/s/s. (d = 6.4 meters)

Formula: d=Vit+

−9.8 m/s /s∗(2 s)
Solution: d=(13 m/s )(2 s)+
2
*The gravitational acceleration is negative because the object is thrown against the force
of gravity.

3) Find the a) distance and b) final velocity of a ball dropped from rest from the top of a
building, after 6 seconds. g = 10 m/s/s. (d = 180 m; Vf = 60 m/s)
2
gt
Formulas: d= =(10 m/s /s)¿ ¿

Vf =¿=(10 m/ s /s)(6)

4) A shell is shot into the air with an initial speed of 70 m/s at an angle of 30 degrees above
the horizontal. The fused is timed to ignite the shell just as it reaches its highest point
above the ground. Calculate the height at which the shell explodes. Assume g = 10
m/s/s) (h = 61.25 m)
Formula: h=¿ ¿

5) What is the angle of rotation between two hands of a clock, if the radius of the clock is
0.70 m and the arc length separating the two hands is 1.0 m? Express answer in
radians. (∆θ = 10/7 radians)

Δ s 1.0 m
Formula: ∆θ= =
r 0.7 m

6) Find the centripetal acceleration in decimals of a car following a curve of radius 500 m at
a speed of 25 m/s. Answer in 3 significant figures and decimal form. (a c= 1.25 m/s/s)

Formula: a c = =¿ ¿

7) What is the centripetal force exerted on a 1,600 kg car that rounds a 100 m radius curve
at 30 m/s? ( F c = 14,400 N)
2
v
Formula: a c= =¿ ¿
r
F c =m ac =(1,600 kg)(9 m/s /s )
8) Calculate the angular speed of a 0.3 m radius car tire when the car travels at 15 m/s.
Express answer in rad/s. (ω = 15 rad/s)

v 15 m/ s
Formula: ω= =
r 0.3 m

9) What is the potential energy of a ball with respect to the ground when it is on a 15 meter
long slide that is inclined by 30 degrees with the horizontal? The ball’s mass is 20 kg.
Use 10 m/s/s as the value of gravitational acceleration. (PE = 1500 J)

Formulas: dy(at an angle) = dy(sinθ) = 15 m(sin 30) = 7.5 m

PE=mgh=(20 kg)(10 m/ s /s)(7.5 m)

10) A driver that was traveling at 54 kph observed that the traffic light 240 m ahead of him
turned red. In his country, the traffic light is timed to stay red for 24 seconds. Determine
the speed of Ian’s car as it passes by the traffic light. Express your answer in m/s with
one significant figure only. (5 m/s)
Formulas:
