CYBERBULLYING

Cyberbullying is the misuse of information technology to harass or harm other people. It

could be in the form of posting negative comments, unwanted pictures or false contents on a social
networking site. All these occur with an intention to embarrass of humiliate someone in public. A
cyber bully may be an online stranger, or it can be an individual whom the victim knows.

Today the majority of people particularly teenagers spend more time on social networking
sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and so on. There are several ways we can avoid being
a victim of cyberbullying. It is important not to respond to any posts or messages shared,
responding to such posts will only worsen the situation as bullies generally intend to provoke a
reaction out of the target. Instead of replying to an abusive text message or other forms of
communication, one must save it as evidence against cyber bully. Being cyberbullied can be really
upsetting and exhausting, so it's important to let a responsible adult such as teacher, parent, or
school counsellor know what’s going on. They’ll be able to help.

Cyberbullying can have lasting consequences to the victims. It may lead to an emotional
distress, depression, school violence and school avoidance. Cyberbullying activities are so harmful
that it could compel the victim to commit suicide. Thus, parents play a critical role in preventing and
responding to cyberbullying. Monitoring Internet use and communicating with teenage children are
important strategies. Parents should carefully monitor what your children are doing online.
