The document discusses performing a three-phase fault simulation in Power World Simulator software. It includes objectives, an introduction to three-phase faults, and steps to simulate the fault in edit and run modes. Voltage and current values at each bus are displayed from the simulation and calculated by hand, and results are compared.

EXPERIMENT # 10
Perform the three-phase fault to calculate parameters of fault current in
PWS.

Objective:
At the end of this lab session students will be able to

• Power flow in Power World Simulator

• Perform the simulation for calculating different parameters.

Introduction:
A three-phase fault, also known as a symmetrical fault, occurs when all three phases of a
power system are simultaneously short-circuited. This can happen due to various reasons
such as equipment failure, lightning strikes, or human error. Three-phase faults can cause
significant damage to power systems if not promptly detected and cleared.

Simulation:
Edit Mode:

Run Mode:

Z BUS:
We calculated Z bus by saving a file in desktop in MATLAB format and then open it in
editor of MATLAB and calculated z bus is displayed below but we can also write complete
matrix of y bus in MATLAB editor and then take the inverse of that y bus matrix then z bus
will be calculated but that is lengthy process.

Voltage verification:

Fig 4: Voltage at each bus in PWS

Voltage at each bus has same magnitude at all phases but the difference is in their angles
because this fault is three phase fault so that is why distribution of voltage at each bus is
symmetrical.

Current verification:
Current at each bus has different values in magnitude and angle. Their per unit values are
displayed below we can also calculates current values in amperes. At each bus the values of
current in magnitude is same but different at phases in that particular bus.

Conclusion:
In this lab we learn about three phase fault. This fault is symmetrical because all the phases
have same difference from each other but the only difference is in their angles by putting
fault in three phase in PWS model. Power flow in Power World Simulator Perform the
simulation for calculating different parameters .We calculated z bus and then observe the
results in voltages and currents at each phase and then compare them with hand written
calculations. Results are almost similar.
As three phasefault is symmetrical so don’t need to check the values at each bus because they
will be same.Voltage and current calculations proves that the values are same at each phase
but angles are different .Then we draw the circuit in PWS and set all the values according to
instructions and then analyse the whole circuit in run mode and set the values in fault
parameters. We also find currents at each bus and the values were different at each bus and
then did handwritten calculations. Compare all the calculated values with the simulated
values results are almost same
