CHAPTER 1 : Introduction

Background of the study The word acne comes from the word acme meaning "the highest point", which Comes from the Greek acme meaning "point" or "spot" - it was originally Misspelt, with an 'n' rather than a 'm' in 1835. Acne is a disease that involves The oil glands of the skin. It is not dangerous, but can leave skin scars. Your Skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands located under the skin. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. Sebum, an oily liquid, is produced by these glands. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of your skin. A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin. Pimples grow when these follicles get blocked. In humans, when pimples appear they tend to do so on the patient's face, back, chest, shoulders and neck. Acne develops when follicles get blocked and infected.

Facts and statistics about the incidence of acne: The Acne life can be in 6-14 years and longer in Adolescents 85% develop mild acne (zits); 15% develop clinical acne ranging from mild to sever and in the Race: Black Americans & Whites; White Americans > Japanese, Swiss. Acne is such an unpleasant issue to get not only whilst it's all-red and loud, that individuals can spot it and inform you how bad it looks. However, the agony of suffering from scars of such a terrible skin dilemma would definitely bother any human being. The awful consequences of having acne don't end after the red bumps are gone it is where it will leave a tremendous scars.

According to our survey that In the community of University of the Immaculate Conception there are about 85% of people (mostly in the teen years) experiencing Acne Problem, Many wanted to get rid of this red dots with pus in the body to have a confidence in one-self, having self-esteem , anxiety , depression and to get rid of expenses by treating acne to prevent an acne scars. This study aims to give awareness to those who are experiencing acne and knowledge about the development and effects in the psychological and emotional issues who are experiencing acne.

Thesis Statement Acne is the most common skin problem of the MLS-2A students. Statement of the Problem The study aims to determine the feelings of MLS-2A on acne problems, specifically it seeks to answer to the following:
1. What is the demographic profile of the MLS-2A experiencing acne

problems in terms of sex.

2. What of these factors greatly affects the lives of the MLS-2A students :

a.) Consciousness

b.) Self-esteem

c.) Anxiety

d.) Depression

e.) Insecurity

3. Is there a significant difference in the feelings of the MLS-2A on acne

problems when grouped according to sex.

Scope and Delimitation The study will be limited to the MLS-2A of the University of the Immaculate Conception who are enrolled at the UIC main campus for a summer year class of 2011.

Relevance of the study This study is important to the following people:


1. MLS Program- It will give an information to get rid of the possible causes

of acne .

2. MLS student- It will give an awareness of preventing acne invades in their

body.

3. UIC community- It will give knowledge about acne and how many people

are involved in this problem

Definition of terms

1.) Acne- The problem usually encountered by the respondents

2.) MLS-2A- The respondents in this research

3.) Consciousness- A term of the relationship between the mind and the world with

which it interacts.

4.) Anxiety-The absence or presence of psychological stress

5.) Self-esteem- Reflect a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own

Worth

6.) Depression- A state of low mood and aversion to activity

7.) Insecurity- Is a feeling of general unease or nervousness that may be triggered

by perceiving of oneself to be vulnerable in some way.
