4.2 OTN Features

The OTN technology ensures flexible service cross-connections in an E2E manner,
and enables bandwidth sharing of different services. With the help of abundant
OTN overheads and easy operations on the NMS, users can easily maintain
networks and locate faults.

4.2.1 E2E Service Management Based on OTN Overheads

With the help of the abundant OTN overheads defined in ITU-T G.709, several
simple operations on the NMS can implement E2E service monitoring and
management.

With the help of OTN overheads, an OTN network transparently transmits client
services and provides forward error correction (FEC) capabilities. During network
operating, the overheads and NMS work together to monitor and manage E2E
services. Once a fault occurs, it can be easily located. Figure 4-6 shows E2E service
management based on OTN overheads.

4.3 Flexible Bandwidth Application Based on ODUflex

Huawei OptiXtrans DC908 supports the flexible optical channel data unit
(ODUflex) technology and the bandwidth ranges from 1.25 Gbit/s to 100 Gbit/s. It
can adapt to various service types such as storage and data services.

As shown in Figure 4-7, an FC800 service occupies seven sub-timeslots and is

mapped into an ODUflex container; an FC1600 service occupies 12 sub-timeslots
and is mapped into an ODUflex container; an FC3200 service occupies 23 sub-
timeslots and is mapped into an ODUflex granularity. The FC800, FC1600, and
FC3200 services share the same OTU4 wavelength for transmission.

4.4 Redundancy and Protection

Huawei OptiXtrans DC908 supports multiple types of network- and device-level
protection, which ensures reliable data transmission.

Network-Level Protection
As shown in Table 4-2, Huawei OptiXtrans DC908 supports multiple types of
network-level protection.

Table 4-2 Network-level protection

Protection Description

Optical Optical line protection (OLP) protects line fibers between adjacent
line sites using the dual fed and selective receiving function of OPC
protection boards.

Intra- Intra-board 1+1 protection: The dual feeding and selective

board 1+1 receiving function of the OPC board (OLP module) is used to
protection protect services against a fault on the working channel.

Protection Description

LPT After the overhead bytes that support the link-state pass through
(LPT) protocol are added to the WDM-side signal frame format,
the running status of a network access node or service network
can be monitored.

Client-side Client 1+1 protection: The dual fed and selective receiving function
1+1 of the OPC board (OLP module) is used to protect services against
protection a fault on the line side of the OTU board, a board fault, or a
subrack fault.

Device-Level Protection
As shown in Table 4-3, Huawei OptiXtrans DC908 supports device-level protection,
including power supply redundancy and fan redundancy.

Table 4-3 Device-level protection

Protection Description

Power supply redundancy 1+1 backup

Fan redundancy The fan tray assemblies provide 2+1 backup. After one fan tray
assembly fails, the system can still run properly for a short term at
room temperature. However, to ensure long-term stable running of
the system, replace the fan tray assembly in a timely manner.

4.5 Automatic Optical Power Management

Huawei OptiXtrans DC908 supports multiple optical power management modes.

For details, see the following table.

Featur Description
e

ALS When non-OTN services are received, automatic laser shutdown (ALS)
turns off the laser on the optical port in the transmit direction when a
fault is detected on the client or WDM side and turns on the laser
after the fault is rectified. ALS enables the transmission of information
about a fault to a client device, so that the client device can learn the
link status.

AGC Automatic gain control (AGC) ensures that channel gain is not
affected by wavelength adding or dropping or optical power
fluctuation of a WDM system, and therefore guarantees normal
service running in the WDM system.

IPA The optical amplifier (OA) board has high output optical power. If a
fiber cut occurs, the laser on the OA board must be shut down
promptly; otherwise, the exposed laser radiation may cause personal
injury during maintenance. Therefore, the system provides the
intelligent power adjustment (IPA) function. When a fiber cut occurs
on the line, the IPA function can shut down the laser on the affected
OA as early as possible to prevent personal injury.

IPC The intra-station power control (IPC) function is used to detect intra-
site fibers. When an intra-site fiber cut occurs, the output optical
power of the OA board is automatically controlled to be lower than or
equal to 21.3 dBm.

4.6 L1 Service Encryption

Some customers who have high requirements on transmission security expect to
establish an encryption channel for service transmission based on the physical
layer.

The service encryption function uses an encryption algorithm to encrypt client

services at the physical layer. Service encryption on a WDM OTN network is called
L1 service encryption.

With convenient deployment of Figure 4-8, the encryption processing module can
be integrated into an OTU or a tributary board to implement encrypted
transmission of services.
