inequalities by graphing
GRAPHing Linear Inequalities
The graph of the linear equation y = x + 3
separates the coordinate plane into three open half-plane
sets of points:
the points on the line 3
+
x
the points above the line =
y
the points below the line.
open half-plane
The regions above and below the line
are called open half-planes, and the
line is the boundary of each half plane.

3
The upper half-plane and the
P (2, 5) boundary line together form the
upper open half-plane
P (2,5) graph of y ≥ x +3.
y>x+3 3
+
x The lower half-plane and the
=
y
boundary line together form the
lower open half-plane graph of y ≤ x +3.
y<x+3
The graph of an open half-plane
and its boundar y is called a
closed half-plane.

4
The graphs of inequalities are shown by shading. If the boundary line is
part of a graph, it is drawn as a solid line. If the boundary line is not part of the
graph, it is drawn as dashed line.

(a) y > x + 3 (b) y < x + 3

(c) y ≥ x + 3 (d) y ≤ x + 3
System of Linear Inequalities
A system of linear inequalities is a set of two or more
linear inequalities in the same variables. An example is shown
below.
y<x+2 Inequality 1
y ≥ 2x − 1 Inequality 2

The solution of the systems of linear inequalities in

two variables is the set of all ordered pairs that satisfy both
inequalities.
StEPS IN GRAPHING SYSTEMS OF INEQUALITY
1. Transform the given inequality into an equivalent inequality that has y alone
on one side.
2. Treat the inequality as a linear equation and graph the line as either a solid
line or a dashed line depending on the inequality sign.
a. If the inequality sign does not contain an equals sign (< or >) then draw
the line as a dashed line.
b. If the inequality sign does have an equals sign (≤ or ≥) then draw the line
as a solid line.
3. Shade the region that satisfies the inequality
4. Repeat steps 1 – 3 for each inequality
5. The solution set will be the overlapped region of all the inequalities.
Determine the solution to the following system of inequalities.
5x – 2y ≤ 10
3x + 2y > 6
Step 1: Transform the given inequality into an equivalent inequality that has y alone on one side.

5x – 2y ≤ 10
– 2y ≤ – 5x + 10
5
y≥ x-5

Note: When dividing by a negative number, switch the inequality sign.

Step 2: Treat the inequality as a linear equation and graph the line as either a solid line or a
dashed line depending on the inequality sign.

Step 3: Shade the region that satisfies the inequality.

Since the inequality

states the y must be greater

than or equal to x – 5, the
2
region to be shaded will be
that above the boundary line.
y≥ x -5

Step 4: Solve the second inequality for y.

3x + 2y > 6
2y > – 3x + 6

Step 5: Treat the inequality as a linear equation and graph the line as either a solid line or a
dashed line depending on the inequality sign.

Since the inequality

states the y must be greater

than to – x + 3, the region to

be shaded will be that above

the boundary line.

Step 7: The solution set will be the overlapped region.

Step 4: Solve the second inequality for y.

to be shaded will be that
below the boundary line.

y≤ x-1

Step 7: The solution set will be the overlapped region.

The two regions have

no co m m o n po in t, y≥ x+2

therefore the system
