Astrology is a science of observations. By monitoring nature, sky, stars and planets, the
primitive man noticed their impact on human life, our existence, growth, thoughts and
our very being.
He could examine relative importance of changes occurring in nature to that of
planetary movements. Slowly, he started predicting changes in nature based on
movement of planets, stars, Sun and Moon. After years of persistent study, deep
observations, experiments, tests, the man started deriving principles.
The primitive man, then gave various names to signs, planets, nakshatra and houses
based on the characteristics observed in them. The names given were very familiar
belongings that he possessed or known, like animals – ram, bull, lion, then creatures
like crab, fish, Scorpio and things like bow – arrow, pot, scale etc. This entire system he
created was on his keen observation of nature and sky.
With time, the knowledge was passed on to following generations. The unceasing
research till date had given us confirmation on their observations.
When we see sky, it is infinite, there are no boundaries or lines as we draw in our chart.
Sky is endless. The lines we draw is imaginary for our suitability to measure the
distance and to differentiate. Houses were made basically as a measuring system that
creates a structure of reference by which we can identify positions of planets against the
background of zodiac.
Houses are fixed with their position. Each of the section defines zones of specific
environmental effects. Houses in astrology are the dwellings where dynamisms of
planets and signs reside, where planets and signs demonstrate as situation or events.
Transit of planets through houses makes up the circumstances of our daily life. Houses
are the places where stuff happens and the answers to all ‘where’ is in houses of chart.
Houses were created by early astrologers to divide space, and there are different
approaches taken in measuring house division. The most commonly used house
systems are Sripati, Placidus and Equal House system.
House in symbolic sense is an area of application, action or expression of an energy
(Sign or Planet), an area of life where energies can manifest as events, or result in
realizations, or teach a lesson, a place where lessons are learned and where a strategy
can accomplish an objective.
12 houses are equivalent to 12 signs. Meanings of houses are derived from signs but

Houses indicates the outward experiences of chart. In a way houses will decide the
situation externally. But how it will be felt internally can be judged by the sign, it carries
and the planet if any placed there. Together they will give the results. How the houses
are experienced, will be decided by the sign they hold thus the inherent disposition to
that house is the sign or the planet if any placed there.

The sign in a house shapes the house in specific way depending on quality of sign.
There are internal attributes of signs based on elements:
Fire signs - 1-5-9, Aires, Leo, Sagittarius indicates passion and sense of identity
Earth Signs - 2-6-10, Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn being strong and stable
Air Signs - 3-7-11, Geminin, Libra, Aquarius being knowledgeable and communicative
Water Signs - 4-8-12, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces being emotional and caring

Odd Signs - 1-3-5-7-9-11 are masculine in nature, demands being independent, bold,
active, assertive, determined, offensive and dominant.
Even Signs - 2-4-6-8-10-12 are feminine in nature, being passive, receptive and works
best with cooperation of others.
These division, help in judging the result of house. If house falls in odd sign then it
functions well by being dashing and with sincere trials where as if house has even sign

Ascendant, 1st house is Prime of all houses. All other houses and their understanding
come from 1st house. Any analysis is done, is in context with first house. In a way all
houses are working under ascendant. Ascendant is process of beginning and initiation.
Strength of 1st house will depend on what sign it’s in and how it aspects rest of birth
chart. Planets here will be of strong influencing factor and their energies are easily

With first house we shall see all 12 houses. It is the eye for all 12 houses. For strength
of 1st house, always check strength of Sun, Mars and Jupiter – irrespective of any sign
or planet placed in there.

The orderliness of any house is with its owner. When planet transits or placed in any
house, it carries its agenda there. Aim is to fulfill purpose of the house it ‘owns’. For
example, For Libra ascendant, Mars is ruler of 2nd and 7th. When Mars is in 3rd, it will
fulfill the aim of 2nd (finance, family) and 7th (partner) through, its placement in 3rd house
(self-efforts, courage, communication and travel).
For 1st house, we need to check placement of ascendant lord to review results of 1st

1. Dharma -Fire - 1-5-9. A person is born on this earth to fulfill certain duties. This is
most important trine as it has ascendant in it, shows your duties, responsibility and
purpose of life. Ascendant and quality of the sign/planet it carries, becomes your prime
duty in association with 5th- past deeds and 9th your Bhagya.
These houses also show native’s righteousness and morality, gives enthusiasm and

Water, earth and even signs gets strength here.

These houses get activated with dasha. When right dasha comes only then we are
blessed with child -5th house and we can have awareness of life with advent of good

6. Kendra – Movable - Houses are 1-4-7-10. They are also called as Naisargik Shubh
and Vishnu sthan. These houses are working naturally and has self-activating quality
with them. They are foundation of life like pillars. These houses are movable and they
continuously grow.
Fire, Air and Movable signs are good in these houses.
Kendra gets activated by transit. For example, for Taurus ascendant, Saturn is lord of
10th house, a kendra house, gets activated by its transit through 10th house or by making
any connection with 10th through aspect, conjunction or placement.
In their dasha, we get our pleasure, security and comfort. They develop our conscious
for the fundamentals of life.
7. Panphar - Fixed - Houses are 2-5-8-11 Money Giving as 2nd to Kendra so it is gains
of Kendra. These houses are associated with individual desires and the areas of life we
want to control for security.
2nd house is family possessions and self-earned money.
5th house is unexpected money through speculation, game or competition.

Panphar houses gets activated with dasha. During their dasha period native experience

8. Apoklim - Dual - Houses are 3-6-9-12 Reduction or restriction in results as 12th to
Kendra. First 15 degree comprise of movable and the second 15 degree is of fixed
nature. They give dual results of controlling and developing. They do not operate 100%.
There is a limiting factor attach with these houses.
3rd house is of siblings. Mother’s love will be divided once you have sibling but you will
learn to share things with them.
6th house is of disease. Once you are diagnosed with a disease there is restriction on
eating and daily routine with dos and don’ts. We secure our health with that.
9th house is of beliefs and is connected with religious understanding. We all have belief

9. Upchaya - Houses are 3-6-10-11 These houses give assured gradual growth
with time through struggles and difficulties. There is potential to grow with your own
efforts, experiences, struggles and learning from them. There will be opportunity to
expand and explore.
3rd house is of efforts and courage which increases as we grow. There are struggles
also involved in maintaining that efforts.
6th house is of health, vitality, enemies or competitors and our daily routine. As we age
there is rise in all these matters. The challenge here is to have good health and keep
our enemies away.
10th house is of work and our exposure with people, society which will grow with time.
We learn to deal with coordination and cooperation which is a battle in itself.
11th house is of our income, friends and network. It is a task to maintain the level we

Upchaya houses get activated by dasha except the 10th (also kendra) as it activates
with transit. During the dasha of the upchaya house lord, native will have such

10. Dusthana - Trik - Houses are 6-8-12 These houses are unpleasant in nature,
indicates difficulties and has keys to transform our lives, consciousness and give
awareness. They are wake up calls or shock points in our lives.
Dusthana houses represents suffering, but also help us through our journey to cultivate
spirituality, detachment, achieve liberation and reach enlightenment.
6th house is of enemy, debts and diseases majorly. It indicates matters which frustrates
us. It is also upchaya house so there is scope of improvement with time. Serving people
in need is the best remedy here.
8th house is of fear, insecurity and our attachments. It gives us intense cry. This is also
moksha house and the only remedy is to transform for higher good.
12th house represents hidden enemy, loss of energy, foreign land, journeys, liberation,
isolated places like jail, asylum and hospital.12th house works best when we let go of
our attachments, accepts the loss and surrender our self to nature.
Dusthana house lord’s dasha give pain, fear and takes away things from life but with
that there is more awareness and evolution of soul.
Movable and dual signs are best in these houses.
11. Visible; Invisible - Houses are 7 to1; 1 to 7 respectively.
7th to 1st houses evolve through our coordination with others and rest of the world.
1st to 7th houses are for our personal development and progress at each stage.
When dasha of these house lords are going on, the situation is demanding you to
consider those characteristics for progress.
12. Maraka - Houses are 2-7 and the sign it possesses, its characteristics become
maraka. Sign’s traits can be fateful if not taken care and gives death like suffering.
As per Kalpurush kundli 2nd and 7th house has Taurus and Libra signs respectively
owned by Venus so quality of Venus(overindulgence) and both signs will be maraka for
all and apart from this, as per ascendant and each house also. Obsession with traits of
the sign in these houses can be maraka for native.
For example, For Geminin ascendant, Cancer -2nd and Sagittarius – 7th sign becomes
maraka. So, trait of being emotional, clingy (Cancer) and unbeatable enthusiasm, being

13. Badhaka - Houses are 11, 9 and 7 for Movable, Fixed and Dual Signs respectively.
Characteristics of sign in these houses with respect to ascendant can create obstacles.
They are active any time with their dasha at any age. Aquarius is natural badhaka Sign
and Saturn is badhaka planet as per Kalpurush kundli.
During the dasha of maraka/badhaka house lord native has to keep in mind the
characteristic which can go against him. Being in balance would be the key to handle
these dasha well.
14. Tri Shadaya - Houses are 3-6-11 indicates desire, anger and greed respectively
which reduces the spiritual development. The strongest among these is 11th house,
represents greed which is also a Kama house. Indulgence in these qualities can be
obstruction for evolution of the soul.
During their dasha period, native has to consciously be active in spiritual practices to
calm down and find peace.
Now, one important point we need to remember is, the cluster of houses, mentioned
above can be observed, not only from ascendant but also from each house. As each
house has its own trine, kendra, Dusthana, maraka, badhaka etc. from its own place

For example, in case of Leo ascendant, if we need to observe matters related to 4th
