Exercise 1

Set up the linear program of the following:

1. A manufacturer produces bicycles and motorcycles, each of which must be

processed through two machine centers. Machine Center 1 has a maximum
of 120 hours availability and Machine Center 2 has a maximum of 180 hours
availability. A bicycle requires six (6) hours in Machine Center 1 and three (3)
hours in Machine Center 2. Manufacturing a motorcycle requires four (4)
hours in Machine Center 1 and 10 hours in Machine Center 2. If the pro t is
P450 for each bicycle and P2,500 for a motorcycle, determine the number of
bicycles and the number of motorcycles to produce to maximize the pro t,
considering that the number of motorcycles must not exceed 12 units and
bicycles must be at least 10 units.

2. The Jay Gee Bull Ranch has plans to sell cattle to a large meat packaging
plant. The manager of the ranch believes that each cattle should receive a
minimum of 240 oz of nutritional ingredients A and a minimum of 150 oz of
nutritional ingredients B each week. There are two grains available which
contain both types of nutritional ingredients. One bag of grain 1 contains 12
oz of ingredients A and 25 oz of ingredients B and costs P140/bag; one bag
of grain 2 contains 20 oz of ingredients A and ve (5) oz of ingredients B and
costs P120/bag. Determine the optimum mixture of grains and the associated
minimum cost.

3. How much beef at P150 a kilo which contains 70% lean meat and 30% fat
and how much pork at P110 a kilo which contains 60% lean meat and 40%
fat should be purchased to provide at most 20 kilos of lean meat and at least
8 kilos of fat while keeping the cost as small as possible?

4. A manufacturer produces three products A, B and C. Raw are available at

2,400 units weekly. A and B need 10 units each of raw materials while C
needs 20 units. Both manpower capacity and machine capacity are at 480
hours weekly with A and B each needing 2 man-hours and C, 3 man-hours.
Each unit of A requires 3 hours of machine time while B and C need 2 hours
each of machine time. The contribution to pro t of each unit of the three
products are P25 for A, P22.50 for B, and P30 for C. How many units of each
product (A. Band C) should the manufacturer produce to maximize his pro t?
