DETERMINATION OF ABCD PARAMETERS OF A GIVEN TRANSMISSION LINE NETWORK

Aim : Determination of ABCD parameters of a given Transmission Line network.

Apparatus: S.NO. APPARATUS RATING QUANTITY
1. Digital Voltmeters. 0-500Volts AC 08
2. Digital Ammeters. 0-20Amps AC 08
3. Digital Multifunction meters. --- 03
4. Inductor Coils. (air core type) 0.64milli Henry 30
5. Capacitors (440Volts) 2 micro farad 30
6. Auto Transformer 0-250V 01
7. Connecting Wires ----- As required
Machine Transmission line Model 400Km.
Details:
Theory : Balanced power transmission lines are represented by their π equivalent circuit on a
per-phase basis as shown in Fig. 1 below. Herein, Z and Y represent the line series
impedance and shunt admittance, respectively, (Vs, Is) and (Vr, Ir) represent the
phase voltage and current and the sending end (left terminal) and receiving end
(right terminal).

Fig.1: Medium π Equivalent Circuit Fig.2: ABCD Model of Transmission Line

Through simple KCL/KVL analysis, the sending end quantities are related to the
receiving end quantities by what the so-called ABCD line parameters:
Vs = AVr + Bir

Is = CVr + DIr
where A, B, C, D are called the constants of the network,
Under OC operation we get,
𝑉 𝐼
𝐴 = 𝑉𝑠 | ; 𝐶 = 𝑉𝑠 |
𝑟 𝐼𝑟 =0 𝑟 𝐼𝑟 =0

Under SC operation we get,

𝑉 𝐼
𝐵 = 𝐼𝑠| ; 𝐷 = 𝐼𝑠 |
𝑟 𝑉𝑟 =0 𝑟 𝑉𝑟 =0

Procedure : O.C. & S.C. tests on SE side:

1. Connect the circuit as per fig. (3) For O.C. test on SE.
2. Vary the variac in steps of 100V till 400V and note down the values of
sending end voltage, sending end current and receiving end voltage.
3. Take the average reading of the above values and determine A & C
parameters of transmission line.
4. Connect the circuit as per fig (4) for S.C. test on SE.
5. Short all the three phases at the receiving end of the transmission line.
6. Vary the variac from 0 to 10A in steps of 2A and note down the values of
sending end voltage, sending end current & receiving end current.
7. Take the average reading of the above values and determine parameters B
of transmission line.
