PERSONAL GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT IN PERSONALITY

This term refers to various techniques for improving one’s habits, behaviour, actions and
reactions.

Here are a few examples to clarify what is personal growth

1- Learning to control anger

2- Learning to overcome procrastination
3- Learning to overcome laziness
4- Learning to be more polite and considerate
5- Becoming a more responsible person
6- Learning new things and developing new skills
7- Changing your mind set and becoming more positive

Successful personal growth requires motivation, the desire to improve, and the willingness to
strive to make changes. You also need to be willing to get out of your comfort zone, and
sometimes, do things that are uncomfortable, but are for your own good. An open mind and
the desire to learn and grow are also important.

Personal growth is an on-going process that starts from an early age, but mostly shaped by
parents, teachers, and the environment. However to make the most of it, you need to become
aware of the process, know what it is, and take the right steps to grow and improve yourself.

Sometimes, problems and difficulties are the triggers that awaken the desire to grow, and lead
to making changes in one’s life. At other times, people are inspired to take steps toward
personal growth after reading an inspiring book, watching a movie or reading about people
who achieved success.

This often leads people to new paths, to making changes in their lives, expanding their
knowledge and self-awareness, improving skills, and developing new ones.

WHY IS PERSONAL GROWTH SO IMPORTANT

Personal growth is the on-going process of understanding and developing oneself in order to
achieve one’s fullest potential. Personal development is a vital part in a person’s growth,
maturity, success and happiness. It is the foundation of emotional, physical, intellectual, and
spiritual health.

Many of your actions may already be geared toward “self-improvement”. This self-
improvement, however, is mostly unconscious and for the majority of people it’s a case of
pursuing “things” and “stuff” with the all-too-common assumption that when we get enough
stuff, we will we be happy. You don’t have to search too far to find how wrong this theory is.
Personal growth has a profound effect on every single aspect of our life. As we grow on a
personal level, we begin to feel more passionate about life in general. We are naturally more
motivated because learning and growing add motivation and a sense of excitement.

Personal growth and development provides us with both the incentive and the means to
become the best possible version of ourselves. Ironic as it seems, personal growth expands
our frame of reference to include the people around us instead of becoming more self-
centred. As our world expands, so does our awareness of the possibilities and opportunities
around us. This possibility mind set fills us with an attitude of eager anticipation as we start
each new day.

Working on personal growth is quite easy and starts with the smallest of choices. Choose to
do something kind for yourself and/ or someone else. Notice the shift in energy after doing
any of the following activities:

• Listen to music that makes you feel good, and try dancing to it.

• Open a door for someone.

• Quiet your mind for 5 minutes and focus on your breathing.

• Take a walk in nature.

• Say “thank you” and give a smile.

• Get organized; clean out a drawer, a file, your car…..

• Offer someone else to go ahead of you.

• Choose more positive media to expose yourself to.

• Make a healthier food choice and notice how it affects you.

• Ask someone how they are and truly listen with your whole heart.

• Give someone else the benefit of the doubt. Until you have walked in their shoes, you
cannot know if you would do better.

• When in judgment, ask yourself, is it possible that…? Then consider at least 3 potential
reasons or scenarios to broaden your perspective.

An individual’s personality is a unique entity resulting from the interaction between a person

3. Personality as cause of stress

Another important point to recognise is that a situation by itself is never stressful; it depends
on how a person views it. The way a person views a situation depends on his personality, for
example attending a party is an event, which most people enjoy, but for a reserved person,
attending a party becomes a stressful event. The following table gives a few examples of how
undesirable qualities in the personality make a situation stressful.
