Practice Problems

1. An electric motor is supplied with current by a power supply. If 720 C of charge passes
through the motor each minute, what current is flowing?
2. If a current of 2.4 A flows in a circuit, how much charge flows past a point in one second?

3. A battery supplies a current of 1.25 A to a circuit. How long will it take for 75 C of
charge to flow round the circuit?
4. Calculate the resistance of a lamp if a potential difference (p.d.) of 36 V makes a current
of 4.5 A flow through it.
5. A student measured the resistance of a resistor. To do this, she set up a circuit in which
the resistor was connected to a variable power supply, a voltmeter and an ammeter. Draw
a circuit diagram to represent these components connected together correctly so that the
student could measure the current in the resistor and the p.d. across it.
6. Calculate the combined resistance of four 120 Ω resistors connected in series.

7. A) Are the two resistors connected in series or in parallel?

B) Calculate the current in the 30 Ω resistor.

8. Derive formula to calculate equivalent resistance 𝑅𝑒 for the resistors connected in series.
9. Two batteries of 3 𝑉 connected in series. What is the value of the voltage across them?

10. One coulomb of charge passes through a point in an electric circuit every ten seconds.
What is the current in the circuit?

11. Three resistors, each having a resistance of 25 Ω, are connected in series. What is their
effective resistance?

12. A hair dryer and a curling iron have resistances of 15 Ω and 25 Ω, respectively, and are
connected in series. They are connected to a 60 V battery. Calculate the current through
the circuit.

13. Three resistors, each having a resistance of 30 Ω, are connected in parallel with each
other. What is the value of their effective resistance.
14. Suppose that you are experimenting with a 15 V source and two resistors: 𝑅1 = 2500 Ω
and 𝑅2 = 25 Ω. Find the current for a, b, c, and d below. What do you notice?

A. 𝑅1 in series with 𝑅2
B. 𝑅1 in a circuit alone
C. 𝑅1 in parallel with 𝑅2
D. 𝑅2 in a circuit alone

b. the current through the circuit
c. the voltage drop across the 20 Ω lamp
d. the voltage drop across the 30 Ω lamp

circuit with the resistors connected in parallel. What is the current through each resistor if
they are connected to the power supply separately? Do you notice anything?

its resistors. Find a symbolic expression for the voltage 𝑉2 across resistor 𝑅2 using circuit
