Module Eight Lesson One Activity
Name:
Part 1
Balloons & Static Electricity
Go to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/balloons and run the simulation
1. Play with the simulation and describe what happens when the balloon is rubbed on
the sweater. Explain why this happens
This happens because as the balloon is rubbed on the sweater it becomes negatively charged
since it took all electrons away from the sweater causing the sweater to become positively
charged and also the balloon to be attracted to it.
2. The process you completed in #1 is a called charging an object by friction. Bring your
charged balloon near the wall and describe what happens to the wall. Explain why
this happens
When I brought the balloon near the wall, all the electrons in the wall moved away from the
balloon because the balloon was negatively charged.
3. The effect you observed in the wall in #2 is called polarization. Now, take your
charged balloon and place it somewhere between the wall and the sweater. Observe
what happens, and describe it here. Explain why this happens.
The balloon is attracted to the sweater therefore it moves towards the sweater because the
balloon is negatively charged and the sweater is positively charged and since both are
opposites they attract.
Part 2
John Travoltage
Go to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/travoltage and run the simulation.
Rub John Travoltage’s foot on the carpet and observe what happens.
4. What is this called?
This is called friction.
5. Where have you seen this before?
I have seen this in the last lab with the balloon.
6. Why does this happen?
This happens because when his foot is rubbed on the carpet, the negative charges from the
carpet are transferred to his body while the positive charges from his body transfer to the
carpet.
Watch after you stopped rubbing John Travoltage’s foot on the carpet.
7. What happened to the charges in his body?
The move through the body, spread out, and then stop moving.
8. Were the charges in his body positive or negative?
The charges in his body were negative.
9. Explain why the charges do what they did. (Use a COMPLETE SENTENCE!)
When his leg was moving against the carpet the negative charged from the carpet transfer to
his body and as they are doing that, they are gaining more energy, therefore when his leg
stops moving the charges in his body lose their power and they stop moving and spreading
out.
.
Now, touch John Travoltage’s hand to the door knob. Observe what happens.
10. Explain why this happens. (Use a COMPLETE SENTENCE!)
One John Travoltage’s hand touches the doorknob, he gets a shock. This is because the
negative charges in his body that came from rubbing his foot on the carpet were released
because they were attracted to a positively charged object, the doorknob.
