INTRODUCTION


 Siddha is a traditional medical system of India whose roots
can be traced to Tamil Nadu.

 The basic concepts of the Siddha medicine are the same as


those of Ayurveda.

 Siddha in Sanskrit- ‘One who is accomplished’; refers to


the perfected masters/rishis.

 Believes in the 5 element theory as in Ayurveda.


HISTORY

 According to tradition, there were 18 Siddhars (Persons
who has achieved some extra-ordinary powers).

 Believed that Agasthiyar (Agastya) was the foremost. He


is regarded as the originator of the Siddha medicine and
also of the Tamil language.

 Ancient standards of therapeutic knowledge was well


commendable; flourished to great heights
CONCEPT

 Similarity to Ayurveda largely emphasized

 5-element theory present- therapeutic effects based on


their preponderance or otherwise in medicines

 Body is a conglomeration of 3 humors, 7 tissues and 3


waste products.

 Concept of salvation- Possible through medicines and


meditation

medicine.
 Pulse reading was considerably
developed by the Siddhars and was
used in diagnosis and prognosis of
diseases.

 As per Siddha medicine system diet and life style play a


major role not only in health but also in curing diseases.
This concept of the Siddha medicine is termed as pathya
(do’s) and apathya (dont’s).

 The use of metals, minerals and chemical products


is predominant for medicinal purpose (e.g. Uppu,
gold, silver, mercury, sulphur etc.)
CHEMISTRY IN SIDDHA

 Well developed into a science auxillary to medicine
& alchemy

 Knowledge of plants and minerals were of very high


order.

 Polypharmacists were involved in several alchemical


operations like calcination, sublimation, distillation,
fusion, separation etc.

 Their chemical actions still continue to be a mystery
