1. A sports car moving at constant velocity travels 120 m in 5.0 seconds. It then brakes and comes
to stop in 4.0 seconds, what is the magnitude of the acceleration?
2. A car slows down from 28 m/s to rest in a distance of 88 m. What was its acceleration, assumed
constant?
3. A tourist being chased by an angry bear is running in a straight line toward his car at a speed of
4.0 m/s. The car is a distance d away. The bear is 26 m behind the tourist and running at 6.0 m/s.
The tourist reaches the car safely. What is the maximum possible value for 𝑑?
4. A car makes a trip due north for three-fourth of the time and due south one-fourth of the time.
The average northward velocity has a magnitude of 29 m/s, and the average southward velocity
has a magnitude of 20 m/s. What is the average velocity (magnitude and direction) for the entire
trip?
5. Two cars cover the same distance in a straight line. Car A covers the distance at a constant velocity.
Car B starts from rest and maintains a constant acceleration. Both cars cover a distance of 460 m
in 210 seconds. Assume that they are moving in the +𝑥 direction. Determine:
7. Two trains are approaching each other along a straight and level track. The first train is heading
south at 125 km/h, while the second train is heading north at 80.0 km/h. When they are 2.0 km
apart, they see each other and start to decelerate. Train 1 decelerates at 2.00 m/s2, while train
2 decelerates at 1.50 m/s2. Will the trains be able to stop or will there be a collision?
8. A driver is travelling at 18.0 m/s when he sees a red light ahead. Her car is capable of decelerating
at a rate of 3.65 m/s2. If it takes her 0.350 seconds to get the brakes on and she is 20.0 m from
the intersection when she sees the light, will she be able to stop in time? How far from the
beginning of the intersection will she be, and in what direction?
9. An automobile starts from rest at point P and travels along a straight line with an acceleration of
2.0 m/s2. A second automobile starts from rest at point P 4.0 seconds later and travels along the
same path with an acceleration of 3.0 m/s2. How far from point P will they be when the second
automobile overtakes the first?
10. A locomotive is accelerating at 1.6 m/s2. It passes through a 20 m wide crossing in a time of 2.4
seconds. After the locomotive leaves the crossing, how much time is required until its speed
reaches 32 m/s.

12. A fugitive tries to hop on a freight train traveling at a constant speed of 5.0 m/s. Just as an empty
box car passes him, the fugitive stats from rest and accelerates at 𝑎 = 1.4 m/s2 to his maximum
speed of 6.0 m/s, which he maintains.
12.1 How long does it take him to catch up to the empty box car?
12.2 What is the distance travelled to reach the box car?
13. A stone is dropped from the top of a cliff. It is seen to hit the ground below after 3.55 seconds.
How high is the cliff?
14. A stone is thrown straight downward with an initial speed of 8 m/s from a height of 25 m. Find
14.1 The time it takes to reach the ground, and
14.2 The speed with which it strikes the ground
15. A ball player catches a ball 3.4 seconds after throwing it vertically upward. With what speed did
he throw it, and what height did it reach?
16. From her bedroom window, a girl drops a water-filled balloon to the ground, 6.0 m below. If the
balloon is released from rest, how long is it in the air?
17. A hot air-balloon is rising upward with a constant speed of 3.5 m/s. When the balloon is 14.0 m
above the ground, the balloonist accidentally drops a compass over the side of the balloon. With
what speed does the campus hit the ground and how much time elapses before the campus hits
the ground?
18.
A stone is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 24.0 m/s.
18.1 How fast is it moving when it is at a height of 13.0 m?
18.2 How much time is required to reach this height?
18.3 Why are there two answers to (14.2)?
19. A helicopter is ascending vertically with a speed of 5.40 m/s. At a height of 105 m above the
Earth, a package is dropped from the helicopter. How much time does it take for the package to
reach the ground?
20. A bag of sand dropped by a would-be assassin from a roof of a building just misses Tough Tony, a
gangster 2 m tall. The missile traverses the height of Tough Tony in 0.20 seconds, landing with a
thud at his feet. How high was the building?
21. Roger sees water balloons fall past his window. He notices that each balloon strikes the sidewalk
0.83 seconds after passing his window. Roger’s room is on the third floor, 15 m above the side
walk.
21.1 How fast are the balloons traveling when they pass Roger’s window?
21.2 Assuming the balloons are being released from rest, from what floor are they being
released from rest, from what floor are they being released? Each floor of the dorm is
5.0 m high.
22. A stone is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 15.5 m/s from the edge of a cliff 75.0 m high.
22.1 How much later does it reach the bottom of the cliff?
22.2 What is its speed just before hitting?

22.3 What total distance did it travel?
23. A golf ball is dropped from rest from a height of 9.50 m. It hits the pavement, then bounces
back up, rising just 5.7 m before falling back down again. A boy then catches the ball on the way
down when it is 1.20 m above the pavement. Ignoring air resistance, calculate the total amount
of time that the ball is in the air, from drop to catch.
24. A boy throws a ball straight up alongside a building with a speed of 30 m/s. As the ball is coming
back down, a girl reaches out a window 7.0 m above the boy and catches it.
24.1 How long a time went by between the throwing and catching of the ball?
24.2 How high did the ball go?
