PREFACE

First of all, thanks to Allah SWT, because of the help of Allah, writers
finished writing the paper entitle. So that we can complete this paper to fulfill group
assignments for basic reading, with the titel previewing and predicting.

In writing this paper, we express our gratitude to those who have helped in
completing this paper in a timely manner.

In writing this paper, the author feels that Three are still many shortcomings,
both in technical writing and material, considering the abilities of the author.
Therefore, we hope for criticism and suggestion from all parties for the
improvement of this paper. And we also hope that this paper can provide benefit
for us in partikular and for other parties in general amin ya robbal alamin.

PREFACE

A. BACKGROUND

Previewing is a reading technique by understanding what is in a particular


work without reading the contents of the text. With this Previewing technique, the
reader will be able to provide an overview and find the parts that need to be read,
and the parts that don't.

Predicting is the ability to predict or predict what will come by utilizing


grammatical, logical, and cultural clues. Previewing and Predicting are strategies
can be used before and during reading a text. A quick preview of the key elements
of a text can help to predict what it might be about. This will help to prepare the
information as reading. This paper aims to give insight on somebody‘ reading
technique in previewing and predicting in the second semester of English
Department. Grellet (1996) defines that previewing is a very quick reading
technique to find out some information about a text. Moreover, Duffy (2009:103)
explains that somebody must look for clues to the topic, think about what they
already know about the topic, and predict what they think will happen on the basis
of their prior knowledge.

B. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM

DISCUSSION

A. Understanding Previewing and Predicting

Before you start on trip, you usually look at a map. It helps you plan your
away, then you know what you expect as you travel. This is a good idea in
reading too. Look before you read, then it is much easier to understand. When
you gather information about book by examining its cover, you are previewing.
The aim of previewing is to help you to predict or make some “educated
guesses” about what’s in the book.

Previewing is a reading activity in order to design an image in the reading


text or paragraph. previewing is an activity in speed reading that trains us to be
able to put the text according to the context. This activity also helps us to assess
the level of difficulty of a reading text, and how deep our background
knowledge is on the topic being discussed, in addition to previewing we can
extract the essence of information from a reading text without having to read
word for word. This previewing activity also provides the ability to become one
of the basic assets to increase the level of reading speed.

Predicting is the ability to predict or predict what will come using


instructions that are grammatical, logical, and cultural. Predicting is the reading
skill of someone who has awareness and vigilance of the thinking process that
occurs when drawing an "inference" (drawing conclusions) based on logical
facts found in the text read. In other words, predicting is the ability to predict or
predict what will come by using clues. Before reading a book, we usually
estimate the contents of the book from the cover image or from the title, then
we read the abstract on the back cover of the book. In addition to calculating
the contents of a book, we also estimate the contents of articles and paragraphs.
an article consists of several paragraphs, as readers we can guess the contents
of the paragraphs of each article.1

B. Purpose Previewing and Predicting

The Previewing and Predicting process will lead a person through a series
of questions that will help them make an accurate prediction. These predictions
help a person to think about what they already know about the topic. Previewing

and predicting also aim to get some ideas about what to read, get information
faster, and follow the author's ideas better.2

C. Previewing and Predicting Technique


 The following are some steps for reading by previewing and
predicting:
1. Read the title.
2. See the picture.
3. Read the main sentence in each paragraph.
4. Read the last sentence of the last paragraph, a kind of conclusion
or summary.
5. Pay attention to names, dates, places, numbers and the like.3
