Raft Foundation Design Report

1. Given Data
Column Size: 300 mm x 300 mm

Number of Columns: 5

Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC) of Soil: 150 kN/m²

Load on Each Column: 500 kN

2. Total Load on Raft

Total Load = Number of Columns × Load per Column

Total Load = 5 × 500 = 2500 kN

3. Area of Raft Foundation

Area of Raft = Total Load / Safe Bearing Capacity (SBC)

Area of Raft = 2500 / 150 = 16.67 m²

Assuming a square raft, the side of the raft = √(Area) = 4.08 m

4. Thickness of Raft Slab

Based on IS 456:2000 recommendations and initial assumptions, the thickness of the raft is
taken as 500 mm. This will be checked for adequacy in later steps.

5. Punching Shear Check

Punching shear calculations ensure that the slab can withstand concentrated column loads
without failing. This step requires checking against permissible punching shear stress as
per IS 456:2000.

Punching shear calculations will be detailed in the subsequent sections.

6. Reinforcement Design
Reinforcement design is based on the bending moments generated in the slab due to the
applied loads. This will be calculated using appropriate load distribution and moment
equations.

Detailed calculations for reinforcement will be included later.

7. Conclusion
The raft foundation has been preliminarily designed for the given data. Further detailed
analysis and checks (punching shear, bending, and reinforcement design) are required to
finalize the design. The foundation size and thickness are subject to these verifications.
