Lesson 1: Manipulating the Window

 A rectangular section of the computer's display in a GUI (Graphical User Interface) that
shows the program currently being used. For example, the browser window you're using to
view this web page is a window.
 Windows allows users to work with multiple programs or view multiple programs at once.
Almost all windows allow you to minimize and maximize them, allowing you to hide and
view a program temporarily.

1. Minimize button places the program on the taskbar without closing the window.
2. Maximize button increases the size of an active window to fit the monitor.
3. Restore button brings the window back to its normal size.
4. Close button closes the application on the active window.

Lesson 2: Customizing the Ribbon Toolbar


Ribbon
- Contains the Standard Tabs, Contextual Tabs, and Groups. Each group has its Dialog
Box Launcher. The rightmost button on the bottom part of the ribbon is called the
Collapse the Ribbon button.

 Standard Tabs
1. File tab – Brings us to the Backstage view. This contains the commands that we need to
manage our files and to customize the program.
2. Home tab – This has the commands that are frequently used in the program. This is always
active.
3. Insert tab – Let us insert items like pictures, tables, and shapes in our document.
4. Design tab – Let us change the overall appearance of our document.
5. Page Layout tab – Let us change the layout of our document.
6. References tab – Allows us to add reference information in our document.
7. Mailings tab – This has the commands that help us with our mailing needs.
8. Review tab – Allows us to look back, check, track changes, and protect our documents.
9. View tab – Helps us to change the view and other display features.

Lesson 3: Working with Quick Access Toolbar


The Quick Access Toolbar has the three main buttons.

1. Save button – Let us save our work. Pressing the Save button opens the Save and Save As
dialog box. The shortcut to saving is (Ctrl + S)
2. Undo Button – Let us undo our last action. The drop-down arrow beside the undo icon
shows a list of the previous commands we did. We can undo those commands found in the
drop-down arrow. The shortcut to undo is (Ctrl + Z)
3. Redo Button - Let us repeat our previous command. The drop down arrow does not exist in
this command. The shortcut to Redo is (Ctrl + Y)

Lesson 4: Familiarizing with the Mini Toolbar


 Mini Toolbar – is a set of command in different groups on the Home tab. It includes the
following:
1. Font group

2. Paragraph group

3. Styles group

Dialog box launcher. When it is selected a dialog box appears.


The dialog box differ from one another, but they function the same.
Lesson 5: Using the Shortcut Menus
The shortcut menu shows commands that are related to the item we selected. It appears when we
right-click a specific item. The Ribbon Shortcut menu looks like this.

 Add to Quick Access Toolbar


The Add to Quick Access Toolbar adds the selected icon on the quick access toolbar. We right-
click the icon that we want to include on the Quick Access toolbar. It will now be added there.
 Customize the Quick Access Toolbar
The Customize the Quick Access Toolbar opens a dialog window that will allow us to modify the
ribbon.
 Show the Quick Access Toolbar below the Ribbon
The Show the Quick Access Toolbar below the Ribbon helps us to move the Quick Access toolbar
to its specified destination. When we select this, the Shortcut menu changes the word “below” to
“above”.
 Customize the Ribbon
The Customize the Ribbon, similar to the Customize the Quick Access Toolbar, helps us change
the icons on the Ribbon. A dialog box will appear and ask us to modify the icons. If there is no
need to customize the Ribbon, we will not change any of the settings.
 Minimize the Ribbon
The Minimize the Ribbon, located at the Shortcut menu, is used to hide the entire Ribbon. We
right-click this to see something like the image on the next page. To bring the ribbon back, we
right-click it again.

Lesson 6: Displaying the Navigation Pane


Navigation Pane
- Helps us to rearrange the content in our documents, the Navigation Pane includes a search
box and three (3) tabs.
1. Headings tab – shows the heading that contains the word that we are searching for.
2. Pages tab – shows the page that contain the text that we are searching for.
3. Results tab – shows all the matches of the text that we need to find.

Lesson 7: Locating the Backstage view


To display the backstage view, select the File tab on the Ribbon.
If we want to close the backstage view, we select the back button at the upper-left corner, or press
the Esc (Escape) key.

New Document
- When we start using the Microsoft 2013, it will ask us to open a new document. We select
the Blank document and the new document is ready for use.

Saving Commands
- After creating a document, we can now save it on our computer, we use the Save As
command if we want to save the file with a different file name, location, or different format.
- If we have a document or file that was saved before, we simply use the Save Command.

Document Exit
- When we are done working on a document we can close it by simply selecting the Close
button.

Old Document
- We can open an old document that we created before, we can search for it on the
Backstage view by using the Open page.
