• Experiment No.:ES-EE191-4.
• Title: Determination of resonance frequency and quality factor of series R-L-C circuit.
• Apparatus required: Power Supply, Function Generator, CRO, Series Resonance kit,
Connecting Leads.
• Theory:
A circuit containing R, L and C elements is resonant when the circuit power factor is
unity, i.e. the applied voltage and the circuit current are in phase. If such condition occurs in
a series circuit, it is termed as series resonance.
In an RLC series circuit, when XL = XC, the impedance will be purely resistive in
nature.Thus at Resonance, the equivalent complex impedance of the ckt. consists of only
resistance R. Since V & I are in phase, the power factor of resonant ckt. is unity.
The total impedance for the series RLC ckt. is
Z = R + j( XL - XC ) = R + j(ωL – 1/ωC)
Z = R + jX
The ckt. is in resonance when X = 0, i.e
Z=R
Series resonance occurs when, XL = XC , i.e
ωL = 1/ωC
2πfrL = 1/ 2πfrC ⇒ fr² = 1/ 4π²LC
fr = 1/ (2π(LC)½)………….(eq.1.)
Quality Factor, (Q): The Q, or quality, factor of a resonant circuit is a measure of the
“goodness” or quality of a resonant circuit. A higher value for this figure of merit corresponds
to a more narrow bandwidth, which is desirable in many applications. More formally, Q is
the ratio of power stored to power dissipated in the circuit reactance and resistance,
respectively:
Q = Pstored/Pdissipated = I2X/I2R= X/R where: X = Capacitive or Inductive
reactance at resonance, R = Series resistance.

• Procedure:
1. Using the RLC resonance kit, connect the wire leads to the resistor, capacitor, and inductor
along with the output of the function generator to construct the circuit shown in Figure 1. Here
we are measuring the peak to peak voltage across the resistor using the oscilloscope. The three
components are connected in series with the function generator acting as the power supply.
Connect the black leads together at the end of the resistor as noted in Figure 1.
2. Record the values of R, L, and C for this circuit in the space provided in the data sheet.
3. Use equation 1 to compute the expected resonance frequency and record your result in data
sheet.
4. Set the function generator output supply to sinwave mode. Set the frequency to the calculated
resonant frequency.Record the peak to peak voltage from the oscilloscope in the middle of data
table.
5. Check the voltage across resistance by decreasing and increasing frequency little bit, whether
it is more than the value for calculated resonance frequency. If it is more note it down in data
sheet in proper position.
6. Then, adjust the output frequency below the calculated resonance frequency range in 5 steps
and again above in 5 steps, and record the voltages in data table.
7. Turn off all the equipments and disconnect the circuit.
• Report:
1. Plot the graph of voltages across resistance vs. frequency.
