BASIC FIRE FIGHTING STRATEGY

Basic fire-fighting strategies are essential guidelines that outline the initial
steps to be taken when responding to a fire emergency. These strategies
are designed to prioritize life safety, property protection, and the control or
extinguishment of the fire. Here are the fundamental steps and principles of
a basic fire-fighting strategy:

1. Assessment and Communication:

 Assess the situation and determine the fire's location, size, and
potential hazards.
 Call 911 or the local emergency number to notify the fire
department and provide them with relevant information about
the fire's location and any known hazards.
2. Life Safety:
 Ensure the safety of all occupants by alerting them to the fire
and assisting with evacuation.
 Use the building's fire alarm system to sound alarms and
initiate evacuation procedures.
 Encourage occupants to use the nearest exit and avoid using
elevators during a fire.
 Assist individuals with disabilities in evacuating, if necessary.
3. Isolation and Containment:
 If it is safe to do so, attempt to isolate the fire by closing doors
and windows to prevent its spread.
 Ensure that fire doors are closed to compartmentalize the fire
and smoke.
4. Fire Suppression:
 If a small, manageable fire is detected and you have the
appropriate training and equipment, consider using a portable
fire extinguisher to attempt to extinguish it. Remember the
PASS method:
 P: Pull the pin.
 A: Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
 S: Squeeze the handle.
 S: Sweep from side to side.
5. Evacuation:
 If the fire cannot be controlled quickly, or if conditions
deteriorate, prioritize your own safety and evacuate the
building.
 Use safe evacuation routes, stay low to avoid smoke, and cover
your nose and mouth with a cloth if necessary.
 Do not re-enter the building until authorities declare it safe to
do so.
6. Accountability:
 If you are responsible for the safety of others, account for all
occupants to ensure that no one is left inside the building.
 Report any missing persons to the fire department.
7. Emergency Services Arrival:
 When the fire department arrives, provide them with
information about the situation, including the fire's location
and any known hazards.
 Assist firefighters with access to the building and provide
information on occupant locations.
8. Property Protection:
 While life safety is the top priority, attempt to protect valuable
property if it can be done safely. This may include shutting off
utilities or moving flammable materials away from the fire.
9. Follow Instructions:
 Follow the instructions of emergency responders and
authorities at all times. They have the training and equipment
to manage the situation.
10. Recovery and Reporting:
 After the fire is under control, cooperate with investigators and
provide information as needed to determine the fire's cause
and origin.

It's crucial to emphasize that safety should always be the primary concern
in any fire-fighting strategy. If you are not trained in fire-fighting or if
conditions are too hazardous, do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.
Instead, focus on evacuating yourself and others to safety and allowing
trained firefighters to handle the situation. Additionally, familiarity with the
building's fire safety features and evacuation plans can significantly
improve the effectiveness of any fire-fighting strategy.
