SUCCESS -Henry Longfellow
Write an appreciation of the poem” success”
"Success" is a beautiful poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a renowned American poet of the 19th century. This particular poem paints the nature of success and the path to achieving it. The poem's central theme is that success is not attained through sudden bursts of brilliance or luck, but through continuous effort and determination. The opening line sets the tone by establishing that humans lack the ability for rapid, effortless ascent. He compares the journey to success to climbing a mountain, step by step, and to building a pyramid, stone by stone. The lines “The cloudy summits of our time" highlights the gradual nature of progress. The image of "gigantic flights of stairs" suggests that even the most monumental achievements are built upon smaller steps. The poet employs several poetic devices to enhance the poem's message. Metaphors, such as comparing success to climbing a mountain or building a pyramid, create vivid mental pictures and convey the idea of gradual progress and challenges. Similes, like "wedge-like cleave the desert airs," add descriptive power to the imagery. The use of alliteration, as in "solid bastions of the skies," creates a musical quality . The rhyme scheme is ABAB. Through these devices the poem becomes both inspiring and intellectually stimulating. 1. Identify the line that indicates human strength. We have not wings, we cannot soar; But we have feet to scale and climb By slow degrees, by more and more, The cloudy summits of our time.
