YARN: oddments of fingering / 4ply

weight yarn.

GAUGE: n/a

NEEDLES & NOTIONS:

2.5mm DPNs (Note: you could also
use a long circular needle for magic

in 3 sections, it lends itself to DPNs)

Stitch markers
Tapestry needle
Card for ‘ballband’
Stuffing

SIZING: finished bauble measures

approx 3.25 “ / 8 cm tall.

ball-ble
by LILY KATE FRANCE

Why not use yarn to knit more yarn? Ball-ble is a little

bit silly but very cute and fun. Twisted rib and travelling
stitches create a yarn-like texture on the tiniest ball of
yarn you ever did see.

NOTES

Construction: the Ball-ble is worked in two

halves. You start from the centre of the bauble
(under the ‘ballband’) then work in a twisted
stitch pattern that mimics the texture of a ball of
yarn. Decreases are worked to gather the top.

You then pick up stitches in the cast on edge

to work the second half exactly the same as
the first, filling the bauble with stuffing before
gathering and securing the end.

PATTERN
ABBREVIATIONS & TECHNIQUES
Note: for a more seamless finish, you could cast
on using a provisional method, but this is not
p: purl st(s): stitch(es)
necessary since the centre will be hidden under
PM: place marker BOR: beginning of round
the label anyway.
rep: repeat
Using your preferred method, cast on 36 sts.
p2tog: purl 2 together
Divide sts evenly between 3 needles (12 per
k1tbl: knit 1 stitch through back loop
needle).
k2togtbl: knit 2 together through back loop

DDEC: double decrease. (Slip 1 stitch purlwise, Work Rounds 1-19 of either Chart or Written
p2tog, pass slipped stitch over) Instructions. 3 sts.

m1L / m1Lp: make one left (/purlwise). Break yarn and thread through final 3 sts. Pull
(Insert left needle tip under bar between needles taught and draw yarn through to WS.
from front to back, place bar on left needle tip,
knit / purl this stitch through the back loop). Rejoin yarn at cast on edge and pick up 1 in
every st. 36 sts.

Note: it does not particularly matter where

you begin picking up stitches as this will not be
visible under the ballband.

Work second half exactly the same as first. A

few rounds before finishing second half, stuff
bauble as firmly as possible. Work the last few
rounds, add a final piece of stuffing, and gather
final 3 sts.

You will now bury the final end within the stuffing.
Thread final yarn end onto a darning needle
and poke into bauble, passing out the other

side. Squish bauble slightly, cut end, then allow
@lilykatemakes | #Ball-ble bauble to ‘unsquish’ so the end disappears into
the stuffing.
