PAINT

Paint is a program used for creating, editing, and viewing simple or elaborate, black and white or
colour drawings (pictures).
After you create a drawing, you can print it or use it in another document.
To start Paint;
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Paint.
Note. For information about how to use Paint, click the Help menu in Paint.
To Paint;
 Click the shape or line you want to use from the toolbox.
 Click the line width at the bottom of the toolbox.
 Click the colour you want to use from the Colour box.
To draw, drag the pointer across the screen.
To show or hide the Toolbox, Colour box, Status bar;
 Click the View menu and make sure a checkmark appears next to item you want displayed.
To hide the item, click to clear the check mark.
Note. You can drag the toolbox to any location in the window.

DRAWING LINES AND SHAPES


To draw a straight line.
1. In the toolbox, click ╲ (line).
2. Click a line width at the bottom of the toolbox.
3. To draw the line, drag the pointer.
Note. To draw a perfectly horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree diagonal line, hold down SHIFT
while dragging.
To draw a free-form line.

1. In the toolbox, click (Pencil).


2. To draw the line, drag the pointer.
To undo changes.
 On the Edit menu, click Undo (or press CTRL+X).
Note. You can undo up to three changes by clicking the Edit menu, and then click Undo for
each change.
To draw a curved line.
1. In the toolbox, click (the ‘Ƨ’ line).
2. At the bottom of the toolbox, click a line width.
3. Drag the pointer to draw a straight line.
4. Click where you want one arc of the curve to be, & then drag the pointer to adjust the curve.
Repeat this step for a second arc.
Note. Each curve must have at least one arc but no more than two.
To draw an ellipse or circle.
1. In the toolbox, click O (the oval tool).
2. To draw an ellipse, drag the pointer diagonally.
To draw a perfect circle, hold down SHIFT while you drag.
Note. To create a colored fill, click a fill style at the bottom of the toolbox. Click a new color in
the color box to change the line color, or right-click a new color to change the fill color.
To draw a rectangle or square.
1. In the toolbox, click □ (the rectangle tool) to create a square-cornered shape, or click  (the
rounded corner tool) to create a round-cornered shape.
2. To draw a rectangle, drag the pointer diagonally in the direction you want.
To draw a square, hold down SHIFT while dragging the pointer.
Note
 The border width of the box is the same as the thickness selected for the line tools. To change
the border thickness, click the line or curve tool in the toolbox, and then click the thickness
you want in the box below the toolbox.
To draw a polygon.
1. In the toolbox, click (the polygon tool).
2. To draw the polygon, drag the pointer and click at each corner. Double-click when through.
To use only 45- and 90-degree angles, hold down SHIFT while dragging.

PUTTING TEXT IN PICTURES.


To type and format text
1. In the toolbox, click (the ‘A’ button).
2. Drag the pointer diagonally to create a Text frame.
3. On the text toolbar, click the Font, Size, and Style you want for the text.
4. Click inside the text frame, type the text, and then do any of the following as needed.
 Move or enlarge the text frame.
 Click a color to change the color of the text.
 Click (opaque image button) in the toolbox to insert the text on a colored background.
Then right-click in the color box to change the background color.
5. To insert text into the picture, click outside the text frame.
Notes
 To view the text toolbar, click the View menu, and then click Text Toolbar. If it obscures
part of the Paint window, drag the toolbar to any location in the window.
 You can enter text into a picture only in Normal view.

WORKING WITH COLOUR.


To set the default foreground and background colors.
 To set the foreground color, click a color in the color box.
 To set the background color, right-click a color in the color box.
Note. The default background and foreground colors appear at the left in the color box. The top
color chip represents the foreground color. The bottom color chip represents the
background color.
To fill an area or object with color.

1. In the toolbox, click (Fill with Colour).


2. Click a colour from the Colour box.
3. Click the area or object you want to fill.
Note. If the shape being filled has any breaks in its border, the filling color leaks through to the
rest of the drawing area. To find and close any openings, click the View menu, point to
Zoom, and then click Large Size or Custom.
To paint with a brush.

1. In the toolbox, click (Brush).


2. At the bottom of the toolbox, click a brush shape.
3. To paint, drag the pointer.
To create an airbrush effect (spray).

1. In the toolbox, click (Airbrush).


2. To change the size of the spray area, click a spray size at the bottom of the toolbox. To
choose a spray colour, click a colour in the colour toolbox.
3. To spray, drag the pointer.
To use black and white instead of color.
1. On the Image menu, click Attributes.
2. Under Colors, click to select Black and white.
Note. Once you have changed a colour picture to black and white, you cannot change it back to
colour. If you change back to color, only new work will be in color.
To invert all the colors in a picture.
 On the Image menu, click Invert Colors.
Note. Each color is replaced by its color complement. E.g., red becomes cyan, and blue becomes
yellow.
To change the color of an existing line.

1. In the toolbox, click (Fill With Colour).


2. In the color box, click a different color.
3. Position the paint cursor so that it is touching the line you want to change, and then click.
Notes
 To make sure you change only the line color and not the surrounding area, zoom the picture to
a larger size.
 If the line is part of a shape, any connecting vertical and horizontal lines will also change to
the new color.

ERASING
To erase a small area.

1. In the toolbox, click (the eraser).


2. To use a smaller or larger eraser, click an eraser shape at the bottom of the toolbox.
3. Drag the pointer over the area you want to erase.
Note. The selected background color shows what color the eraser will leave behind. You can
change the background color by right-clicking another color in the color box.
To erase a large area.
1. In the toolbox, click (the rectangle selection tool) to select a rectangular area or click (the
free form selection tool) to select a free-form area.
2. Drag the pointer to select the area you want to erase.
3. On the Edit menu, click Clear Selection.
Note. The current background color will be used to fill the cleared area.
To clear an entire image.

1. If any part of the image is selected, click outside of the selected area.
2. On the Image menu, click Clear Image.

WORKING WITH PART OF THE PICTURE


To select part of a picture.
To select a rectangular area, click (the rectangular selection tool) in the toolbox, and then drag
the pointer diagonally across the area.
To select a free-form area, click (the free form selection tool), and then drag the pointer around
the area.
Note. To remove the selection box, click outside the box.
To copy and paste part of a picture.

1. In the toolbox, click (the rectangular selection tool) to select a rectangular area or click (the
free form selection tool) to select a free-form area.
2. Drag the pointer to define the area you want to copy.
3. Select a method of pasting:
 Click (opaque image button) to paste opaquely.
 Click (transparent image button) to paste transparently.
4. On the Edit menu, click Copy. Click on the Edit again, then choose Paste.
5. Drag the selection where you want it.
Note. You cannot paste graphics when the text tool is selected.

CHANGING HOW YOUR PICTURE LOOKS ON THE SCREEN.


To change the size of your picture.
1. On the Image menu, click Attributes.
2. Click the unit of measurement you want to use for the width and height.
3. Type the measurements in Width and Height.
Note. You can also resize your picture by dragging the three image Resize handles, located at
the bottom right corner and along the bottom and right sides of your picture.
To zoom in or out of a picture.
1. On the View menu, point to Zoom, and then click Normal Size, Large Size, or Custom.
To enlarge the size of the viewing area.
1. On the View menu, click View Bitmap.
Your picture fills the entire viewing area. To return to your former view, click anywhere in
the picture.
Notes
 You can also enlarge the size of the viewing area by hiding the toolbox, color box, or status
bar. To do this, clear their check marks on the View menu.
 You cannot make changes to a picture in this view.

To display gridlines.

1. On the View menu, point to Zoom, and then click Custom.


2. Under Zoom to, click 400%, 600%, or 800%, and then click OK.
3. On the View menu, point to Zoom, and then click Show Grid.
Note. To remove the gridlines, clear the Show Grid check mark,
-Or-
Click View, point to Zoom, and then click Normal Size.
To Flip or Rotate a picture or object.
1. In the toolbox, click (the rectangular selection tool) to select a rectangular area or click (the
free form selection tool) to select a free-form area.
2. Drag a box around the item you want to flip or rotate.
3. At the bottom of the toolbox,
 Click (opaque image button) to flip or rotate opaquely.
 Click (transparent image button) to flip or rotate transparently.
4. On the Image menu, click Flip/Rotate.
5. Click the option you want.
To Stretch or Skew an item

1. In the toolbox, click (the rectangular selection tool) to select a rectangular area or click (the
free form selection tool) to select a free-form area.
2. Drag a box around the item you want to change.
3. On the Image menu, click Stretch/Skew.
4. Click the stretching or skewing option you want, and then enter the amount.
5. At the bottom of the toolbox,
 Click (opaque image button) to stretch or skew opaquely.
 Click (transparent image button) to stretch or skew transparently.

PRINTING
To print a picture.
1. On the File menu, click Print.
Notes
 To see how the printed picture will look before you print, click Print Preview on the File
menu.
 To set margins or change orientation, click Page Setup on the File menu.

TO USE A PICTURE AS THE DESKTOP BACKGROUND.


1. Save the picture.
2. On the File menu, click
 Set As Wallpaper (Tiled) to cover the screen with repetitions of your picture.
 Set As Wallpaper (Centered) to place your picture in the center of the screen.
