Dear Dr How,
My partner and I are expats in Spain, where we have lived for the past
year. We are thinking of raising our daughter, who is three years old, in
two languages. I’m a native English speaker and my partner is fluent in
Spanish. We speak to her in both languages, but I’ve heard that this can
be very confusing for a child. Do you think it will be stressful for her?
John
Dear John,
Recently, many parents have contacted me with the exact same question –
and the answer is no. Little children are perfectly capable of learning to
speak and read more than one language at the same time. It’s never too
early to begin learning a foreign language. There is no evidence for the
belief that learning two languages at the same time will hurt them. In fact,
several academic studies have confirmed that the opposite is true:
Bilingual children grow up to be not only more creative but also smarter
than children who speak only one language.
Will your child mix up both languages in the process of acquiring two
languages? Yes. Will your child make mistakes while learning to read and
write in two languages? Yes. But so will monolingual kids, those who
speak only one language. Sometimes mistakes are caused by the
influence of the second language, but bilingual children quickly learn to
correct their errors.
It’s very common for expats to think their children should learn the local
language first as the family settle down and adapt to the new culture and
lifestyle. But while it’s true that getting to know a new language will
expand the children’s horizons and have a positive impact on their future
academic achievements, it is just as important to keep up the first
language.
The advantages of bilingualism are well known. Compared to
monolinguals, bilingual children have demonstrated improved reading,
writing and maths skills. In addition, they generally score higher on
standardised tests. Recent studies have also shown that bilingualism
improves memory, concentration and the ability to multitask, as well as
protecting the brain against diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.
But here’s a professional tip: Make sure your bilingual interactions are fun.
Your daughter will learn faster if she has meaningful experiences and
positive feelings about both languages.
Good luck!
