This is Quiz 4, the nal quiz, for LING1001. It is due 11:59PM Dec 6th, 2024, AT THE LATEST! This assignment is not timed, so relax and do your best to be accurate. I do encourage you to work with
others, but you must provide your own answers here with your name and Carleton email address so that I know that you completed this assessment by the deadline and you can get your grade.
It is an Escape Room style assignment. You must answer ten questions based on the content covered after the midterm (morphology, syntax, semantic). Given the limitations of the method of the
assignment, you will not be trapped - you can navigate through the game even if your answers are incorrect. Correct answers will receive a point. There is one point for each of the ten questions, worth
10% of your nal grade.
So, relax, make some popcorn and enjoy!

"About half of the Humans in the world are dead. The exact number of casualties is practically impossible to know, but what is certain is that three weeks ago, our Robot Overlords landed near the small
town of Masterton, in New Zealand, and quickly proceeded to take over the earth. They used poisonous gasses and eliminated the greatest centers of threat. They then locked the survivors in surprisingly
elegant luxury space condos (with big-screen TVs, espresso machines, hot tubs, and all the comforts of a staycation...).
BUT! The Human race will not go down without a ght, and it is left to the resistance – YOU! – to help the humans escape the Robot Overlord prisons and take back the world.
You must exploit these weaknesses to make your escape and bring down the Central Intelligence. On your wrist is a monitor/communication device. Keep this on so we can communicate with you as you
try to complete the 10 tasks necessary to in ltrate and overpower the Alien Robots. Each of the following tasks will allow you to burrow deeper and deeper into the robotic programming, until you reach the
Central Intelligence itself and, through syntactic justice, bring it down...and release all of humanity back into the natural world!"
The news on the TV begins again, obviously in a loop. You watch the information two more times to fully understand what has happened and what you must do. Inhaling bravely, you switch on your wrist
device and read the following instructions:
Quiz Questions
3. TASK 1: BREAK OUT OF YOUR CELL Find the answer and type the response into the door panel on your prison cell door. If you answer correctly, this will create a code that should *
cause the lock to malfunction which would then open and you should be able to leave your cell. QUESTION 1: The Alien Robots have figured out morphological patterns of English,
so now both humans and robots can deconstruct words into components. However, in the following words, there are 2 words with the same morphological structure, one has a
different suffix compared to them, and one exception to the pattern. Which word is the exception?
youngster
monster
faster
gangster
4. TASK 2: CONFUSE AN INDIVIDUAL ROBOT WITH WORDS The lock on your cell door clicks loudly and then the door swings open. You step out into a bright, curving corridor very *
similar to what you have seen on Star Trek or Star Wars, with many closed doors and occasional large windows. The windows look out onto a football field. In the distance, you
recognize the top of Dunton Tower. You exhale with relief knowing that you are at least still on planet Earth! Just then, your wrist device buzzes with a notification, and the following
instructions are presented over its tiny speaker which crackles occasionally: “An Alien Robot is approaching. (bssshhhhd) cannot compute the word (bssshhhhd). If you shout this to
the (bssshhhhd) Robot, it will pause long enough for you to run away.” You tap your wrist device in a panic because some of the words were not clear. You find a button to send a
question prompt. Your wrist device crackles again and a small voice explains: “You know, the linguistic term for the vowel change in pairs of words like [məlɑɪn ̃ ] / [məlɪgnə̃nt] and
[sɛɹĩn] / [sɛɹɛn
̃ ɪɾi] and [pɹoʊfeĩn] / [pɹoʊfæ̃nɪɾi]. Say the term!" You have no time to ask for further information, for around the corner there appears a tall, shiny Alien Robot! Quickly,
you search your memory for all of the awesome morphological terms that you learned in your LING1001 course and instinctively shout out the term that you think best fits the
description given by the voice on your wrist device. You shout:
5. TASK 3: HACK INTO THE ROBOT The tall Alien Robot freezes and the lights in its eyes dim as though it is computing some very difficult information. Instinctively, you run to the *
back of the robot and locate what looks like a control panel. “Just like in the movies!” you whisper to yourself. But before you can hack into this robot, you realize that the control
panel is fastened with a code lock. You must figure out the code in order to open the robot and then shut it down from the inside. But you must work quickly before it unfreezes. On
the face of the panel, you see: EVERYONE OPENS THIS ROBOT You click on the panel and see that the words move. You can easily switch them around.
You try ordering them a few ways, but nothing happens. Frantically, you run around to the front of the robot to make sure it is still frozen and you see letters on its chest. The letters
appear almost like a nametag. The letters are VSODet. You wonder what they could mean. Could that be its name? Could they have something to do with the identifier of this
particular robot? As you run back around the robot to its control panel, you suddenly have a great idea……
6. TASK 4: BREAK EVERYONE ELSE OUT OF THEIR CELLS (TO CREATE A DIVERSION AND GIVE YOU TIME TO WORK) The panel opens with a soft “whishhhh” sound and *
surprisingly, you see a big red button just on the inside of the robot. Holding your breath, you press the big red button and hope for the best. the tall robot in front of you, VSODet you
have now affectionately named it, audibly powers down and slumps forward like a broken tin toy. “Yes!” you exclaim loudly and throw your hands up in victory. You did it! As you are
celebrating, you hear a human voice from behind the door closest to you. A female voice calls out timidly, “Hello? Can you hear me?” You approach the door and quickly explain the
situation and happily tell her that you single-handedly shut down an Alien Robot Overlord. “Wow!” she says, “That’s great! Let me out and I can help.” You look around the door but
don’t see any visible signs of a door handle or locking mechanism. Looking further, you do see a screen at the end of the hallway. “I’ll be right back!” you whisper to the captive
female and go to check out the screen. Feeling brave, you tap the screen to wake it up and it glows a soft bluish colour. Then, grey letter-like symbols float onto the screen. They
appear to be grouped in a manner similar to words, but they appear and disappear quite quickly on the screen. Watching, you realize that there is a pattern to them. You look down
the hallway to the female’s door and see [garid] on the door. When [garid] appears on the screen, you tap it. Nothing happens. Looking along the hallway, you see there are words on
other doors [levan] and [puton]. Watching the words as they appear and disappear on the screen [levan] [lvan] [lvanvan] [puton] [pton] [ptonton] [garid] [grid] [gridrid], you suddenly
understand how to open the door. When [gridrid] appears on the screen, you tap it. The door down the hall clicks and swings open. A scared woman steps out and looks wide-eyed at
you. Quickly, you explain to her that she must do as you did to open all of the doors and free the humans. “But which word do I click on?” she asks you with panic in her voice. “It’s
easy, just follow the pattern.” You say as you are already moving down the hall to try your next task. “What pattern?” she shouts at your fleeing form. With barely a glance back you
shout back to her, “The pattern is ________. Click on that form.”
7. TASK 5: LOCATE THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE ROBOTIC MAZE BRAIN As you turn the corner, running along the hallway of this prison ship, you are amazed at all the *
locked doors and hallways. From behind the doors, you begin to hear other humans calling out for help as the news of “escape” has spread via everyone’s wrist devices. You turn
another corner and recognize the woman that you had just freed. She is not scared now and is confidently tapping the screen in the hallway, successfully unlocking door after door.
She gives you the thumbs-up signal as you turn around again to run down a different hallway. You run down this hallway, and then left, past more doors and more people calling out,
then turn right, to find a hallway ½ full of confused people and the same woman again. Surprised and confused, she hesitantly gives you the thumbs-up signal again as you turn
around yet again. It dawns on you that you are not only out of breath, but you are lost. There do not seem to be any exit doors. You feel imprisoned inside this prison. And your heart
sinks, realizing that the prison ship must have been designed that way. Argh! You say to yourself as you realize that you are going to have to find a way through the ship. Walking
now, not running…because why run, right!? You scan the walls for signs of doors, hatches, portals, windows, levers…anything that could be an exit route. Nothing. Just pretty, shiny
metal surfaces. As you pause to catch your breath, you roll your eyes out of frustration and then you see it. On the ceiling of the hallway, you see a map (of sorts) above you.
(included as an image below for you here) The beauty of it makes you smile wistfully, thinking back to your LING1001 course, and you whisper, “Ah, Syntax!” Considering that the
Alien Robots first landed in New Zealand, you hope that the “map” reflects English tree structure. You suspect that you need to get to the heart of the ship, the Central Intelligence, to
shut it down, so you locate the heart of the Syntactic Tree Structure “map”. Looking down the hallway, you see another map on the ceiling, this one with a node label in red and
pointing slightly left. You smile as you realize that you will be able to navigate the inside of this labyrinthine ship until you find the heart of it. According to this Tree “map”, which word
is your target, the heart of the ship, the Central Intelligence?
8. TASK 6: HACK INTO THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE You turn the final corner and enter a big, bright room. A large, transparent screen is suspended as if by magic in the middle of *
the room. As you stand there, your wrist device crackles to life and you jump a bit, surprised because honestly, you had kind of forgotten that it was there. A voice instructs you: “To
hack into the Central Intelligence, you need to get into the computer system through a back door, through an element of their code that they may not need. An element that would not
be as guarded. See what you can find and good luck!” “What?!” you say to yourself. “Well, I’ve come this far…” you tell yourself and approach the screen. It immediately glows to life
and you see a set of data appear. Once again, you recognize patterns in the “words” and understand eventually that you are looking for an adjunct amongst the arguments. Given the
data of Alien Robot words here, can you find the adjunct? ...BLROK GIBBLET HANQRWK VULCHY MORR... ...BLROK HANQRWK

9. TASK 7: CORRUPT THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE SECURITY You click on the word that you think is the adjunct and the screen changes to a pulsing green glow. The words *
disappear and a series of ones and zeros begin moving across the entire screen. “Whoa, the Matrix!” you whisper to yourself. Your wrist device crackles to life again and the voice
congratulates you on successfully hacking into the Alien Robot system. “Now, we need to corrupt the Central Intelligence Security so that they can’t kick us out as we shut them all
down. We need to add something that they can’t process, or something that will take them a long time to process. Do you have any ideas?” You think for a moment and smile with
glee. You interrupt the stream of ones and zeros by tapping the center of the screen. A voice recorder icon pops up and you announce to the Central Intelligence computer: “You can
not conquer Earth because Earth will be defended by giant bats.” The screen of the Central Intelligence seemed to flicker and dim. The lights in the room also dimmed. The voice on
your wrist device asked, “That worked! What did you do?” You calmly and proudly respond into your wrist device, “Simple, I added ______ __________.”
10. TASK 8: SHUT DOWN ALL ALIEN ROBOT OVERLORDS “Oh, that’s great! That will have them in a processing loop for a while!” said the voice on your wrist device. “That gives *
me an idea for the next task. We need to shut down all of the robots on Earth. If we give them a question that they can’t possibly answer, then they may just simply break down.”
“Uh, huh. Okay….” you wait for the voice to give you the instructions on how to do this, but you both seem to be stuck for ideas. “Oh,” you think out loud, “is a chicken a bird?” “Huh,
what?!” asked the voice on your wrist device. “Oh”, you respond, “in this LING1001 class I had, we discussed whether or not a chicken is a bird.” “Oh, hey, I had that class too!” said
the voice enthusiastically. “Yeah, maybe if we give the computer a word that is an…..um….whatchamacallit, the computer will be too confused to function. It’ll be like a virus….but
what is the thing that I mean, what is that term?” You smile knowingly, glad that you had studied in that class. You type a question into the Central Intelligence, ‘Is Jell-O considered
food?”, and then respond to your wrist device, “The term you are looking for is one of the semantic relations between words. The word “chicken” is a(n) __________ of “bird”.

11. TASK 9: HIDE THE LOCATION OF EARTH FROM THE ALIEN COMPUTERS In a matter of minutes, you hear cheering from the hallway. A human man steps into the Central *
Intelligence room and asks if you were the hero who shut down all of the Alien Robots. You shrug and say, “I guess so. Did it work?” The man nods emphatically, gives you a high-
five, and then looks around. “Now that the robots are all down, we need to make sure that no more of them can come here. Have you seen a map or coordinates or anything?” You
tap the screen again and when the voice command icon pops up, you ask the computer to show you the map to Earth. Once again, the map that appears reminds you of a Syntactic
Tree. The words in the map/tree clearly spell out (in English, fortunately!) the sentence, “Come to Earth, stay for the beautiful rain-free weather! = 1”. You recognize the “1” as
indicating the statement as being true. “Huh.” you think to yourself. “They don’t know that it rains here? And they don’t like the rain? I guess that makes sense if they are computers,
they would not like water…” You tap the screen to change the “1” to a “0”. Nothing happens, which may or may not be a good thing. The other man asks what you did. “Simple,” you
explain. “This is a map for them to find Earth, and this number here stated that the proposition was true. I changed that.” “What do you mean?” asked the man. “I changed the
________ ___________ so that they will not be motivated to come here anymore.”
12. TASK 10: TRANSFER MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO YOUR PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT (OR TO A CHARITY OF YOUR CHOICE) BEFORE EVERYTHING GOES BACK TO *
NORMAL. “Well, okay then…” said the random man as he left the Central Intelligence room of the Alien Robot spaceship. You look down at your wrist device and tap it. There was
no response. The cheering from the hallway was dwindling and you suspected that the humans were now all free and leaving the ship. As you sigh contentedly and proudly, you
savour being alone inside the central computer of an alien ship that you have just successfully overthrown. The entire central computer was there, at your fingertips. You cross your
arms and ponder the power that happens to be in your grasp. You wonder….would you have the power to change something for good before everything goes back to normal? If so,
what should you do? What could this computer have access to on Earth? You tap the screen and at the prompt, you impulsively command the computer, “Transfer a million
Canadian dollars from the Alien Robots to my bank account.” The screen flickered, changed from a pleasing green hue to a sharp purple hue. Your sentence appeared on the
screen in English, with the word “my” in bright red. “Oh,” you whisper, “You don’t understand “my”. Yes, I guess I need to specify the _________.” You then proceed to transfer two
million dollars (you did work for it, after all!) from the Alien Robots to your bank account by clearly identifying yourself. Moments after the transaction is confirmed and as you are
counting all of the new zeros in your account, all of the lights on the ship flicker twice and then go out. You pause and listen as the humming of the ship itself grows silent. You
exhale as feel that the ship has powered down. With your heart beating with happiness and excitement, you eventually find your way out of the ship. As you exit into the blinding
rays of a perfect sunny day of freedom, you are cheered by hundreds of people gathered just outside of the ship. As you smile and wave shyly to them, you feel grateful to have
studied for that awesome LING1001 course!
