“When shall I get at him?” he asked, clenching his fist.

“In the next world,” answered the astrologer. “He died four months ago in a
far-off town. You will never see any more of him.” The other groaned on hearing it.
The astrologer proceeded:
“Guru Nayak-”
“You know my name!” the other said, taken aback.
“As I know all other things. Guru Nayak, listen carefully to what I have to say.
Your village is two days’ journey due north of this town. Take the next train and be
gone. I see once again great danger to your life if you go from home.” He took out a
pinch of sacred ash and held it to him. “Rub it on your forehead and go home. Never
travel southward again, and you will live to be a hundred.”
“Why should I leave home again?” the other said reflectively. “I was only
going away now and then to look for him and to choke out his life if I met him.” He
shook his head regretfully. “He has escaped my hands. I hope at least he died as he
deserved.” “Yes,” said the astrologer. “He was crushed under a lorry.” The other
looked gratified to hear it.
The place was deserted by the time the astrologer picked up his articles and
put them into his bag. The green shaft was also gone, leaving the place in darkness
and silence. The stranger had gone off into the night, after giving the astrologer a
handful of coins.
It was nearly midnight when the astrologer reached home. His wife was
waiting for him at the door and demanded an explanation. He flung the coins at her
and said “Count them. One man gave all that.”
“Twelve and a half annas,” she said, counting. She was overjoyed. “I can buy
some jaggery and coconut tomorrow. The child has been asking for sweets for so
many days now. I will prepare some nice stuff for her.”
“The swine has cheated me! He promised me a rupee,” said the astrologer.
She looked up at him. “You look worried. What is wrong?”
“Nothing.”

01
SSPZEST/Sunil Sahebrao Patil

After dinner, sitting on the pyol, he told her “Do you know a great load is gone
from me today? I thought I had the blood of a man on my hands all these years. That
was the reason why I ran away from home, settled here, and married you. He is
alive.”
She gasped. “You tried to kill him!”
“Yes, in our village, when I was a silly youngster. We drank, gambled, and
quarrelled badly one day - why think of it now? Time to sleep,” he said, yawning, and
stretched himself on the pyol.

My father travels on the late evening train
Standing among silent commuters in the yellow light
Suburbs slide past his unseeing eyes
His shirt and pants are soggy and his black raincoat
Stained with mud and his bag stuffed with books
Is falling apart. His eyes dimmed by age
fade homeward through the humid monsoon night.
Now I can see him getting off the train
Like a word dropped from a long sentence.
He hurries across the length of the grey platform,
Crosses the railway line, enters the lane,
His chappals are sticky with mud, but he hurries onward.

Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,

Eating a stale chapati, reading a book.
He goes into the toilet to contemplate
Man's estrangement from a man-made world.

06
SSPZEST/Sunil Sahebrao Patil

Coming out he trembles at the sink,

The cold water running over his brown hands,
A few droplets cling to the greying hairs on his wrists.
His sullen children have often refused to share
Jokes and secrets with him. He will now go to sleep
Listening to the static on the radio, dreaming
Of his ancestors and grandchildren, thinking
Of nomads entering a subcontinent through a narrow pass.

The poem ‘Father Returning Home’ is written by

Dilip Chitre. It is an account of any old man who does
the hard work for his family but leads a monotonous life
where no one is there to take care of him, to converse
with him or to understand his feelings.
The poet deals with the theme of man’s
estrangement from a man-made word. It depicts dull,
monotonous, exhausting and equally pitiable daily
routine.
The poem consists of two stanzas of 12 lines each.
It is written in free verse with no particular meter or
rhyme scheme followed.

Probably the lack of rhythm is symbolic of the

poet’s father’s uncared-for life. The language is easy and

Honourable Principal, respected teachers, guests

and my friends.
I am here to present a speech on ‘Blood Donation’.
As we all know, blood is an important fluid that
flows in our body. It is so important that if we lose
excess of it from our body, we can die. But we are very
lucky to have a blood transfusion process that can help
to save the lives of the people.

The lives can only be saved if we have enough blood

for the transfusion. Hence, blood donation is the only
medium that can help us. Donating blood helps the
receiver but also enhances the health of the donor. It
revitalizes the body for better health. It is so important
that the world celebrates Blood donor day on 14th June
every year.

Our English Department has organized the ‘Blood

Donation Camp’ on 1st June 2021 in the Multipurpose
Hall of our college from Morn. 8 to Eve. 5. We together
can make the camp successful.

With the said piece of information, I would

request you all to come and donate blood. It can save
many lives. Blood donation is our responsibility towards
society.
Thank You.

(1) Denham is one of the boys in Braithwaite’s class.
He is particularly aggressive and bad-tempered.
Braithwaite’s patience and tolerance transform Denham
into a mature, young man who learns to respect others
and takes up responsibility. This can be seen from his
ability to host the Students’ Council report and
supervise its proceedings.
While hosting the Council, he refers to other senior
girls as ‘miss’. He is a trained boxer and enjoys athletic

activities. He does not want to do P.T. exercises which
he feels are unnecessary for him. He is a natural leader,
who enjoys influence over his classmates. Denham is
clever, assertive and determined in his argument.

(2) A comic relief is an element which provides

humour in a serious situation. The half-yearly report
organized by the Students’ Council was a day of great
importance for the students and teachers of Greenslade
School. The students were assigned roles and
responsibilities and they took their job seriously.
When it was time for Fernman to present his
report on Physiology, the use of skeleton was a comic
relief. He humourously concluded saying, “….basically all
people were the same”. Through his dramatic
presentation, Fernman was able to relieve the tension of
the audience by providing a comical element. Thus, he
brought comic relief in the Students’ Council
Programme.

Through his many adventures, Fogg gains an
understanding and appreciation of interpersonal
relationships. The ending of the novel is unexpected
which results in Fogg winning the bet. Thus, the novelist
tries to convey that life holds more meaning than mere
worldly desires.

(2) The journey undertaken by Fogg and Passepartout

in the novel, ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ is filled
with dangerous obstacles and impossibly difficult
situations. However, with Fogg’s determination and wit,
and Passepartout’s clever ways, they manage to
overcome the numerous challenges.
When Fogg thinks that he will win the bet, he gets
arrested by detective Fix. When Fix eventually realizes
his mistake and releases Fogg, they miss the deadline.
Through the series of events, they realize that the
deadline has not passed, and they reach the Reform Club.
Thus, the novel ends with Fogg being rewarded for his
efforts. Hence, we can say, “Justice is done in the end.”

Holmes follows Jonathan small and Tonga, who
have escaped by a steam launch, over the river Thames
in London. After Small’s capture, he talks about the time
spent in India and stealing the Agra treasure. Thus, the
series of actions in ‘The Sign of Four’ move from London
to India.

(2) Miss Mary Morstan appears early in the extract of

‘The Sign of Four’ and brings two mysteries to Sherlock
Homes.
The first is the puzzle of her missing father. Her
father was an officer in an Indian regiment. In 1878, he
obtained twelve months’ leave and came home. He
telegraphed her from London and directed her to see him
at the Langham Hotel. But she got the message that he
had gone out the night before and never returned.
The second is a series of strange gifts of beautiful
pearls that she has received annually for the past six
years since 1882.
