SECTION D
The following questions are case-based questions. Read the passage carefully
and answer the questions that follow.
29. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
To explain bonding in coordination compounds various theories were proposed.
One of the important theories was valence bond theory. According to that, the
central metal ion in the complex makes available a number of empty orbitals for
the formation of coordination bonds with suitable ligands. The appropriate atomic
orbitals of the metal hybridise give a set of equivalent orbitals of definite
geometry. The d-orbitals involved in the hybridisation may be either inner d-
orbitals i.e., (n - 1) d or outer d-orbitals i.e., nd. For example, Co 3+ forms both
inner orbital and outer orbital complexes, with ammonia it forms [Co(NH 3)6]3+ and
with fluorine it forms [CoF6]3- complex ion.For understanding the structure and
bonding in transition metal complexes, the magnetic properties are very helpful.

1
an outer orbital complex.
30. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
Most of the chemical reactions are accelerated by increase in temperature. For
example, in decomposition of N2O5, the time taken for half of the original amount of
material to decompose is 12 min at 50 C, 5 h at 25 C and 10 days at 0 C. You also
know that is a mixture of potassium permanganate and oxalic acid H2C4O4,
potassium permanganate KMnO4 is decolourised faster at a higher temperature than
at a lower temperature. It has been found that for a chemical reaction with rise in
temperature by 10 C, the rate constant is nearly doubled. The temperature
dependence of the rate of a chemical reaction is accurately explained by the
Arrhenius equation.
(b) The rate of a reaction increases four times when the temperature changes from 300 2
K to 320 K.Calculate the energy of activation of the reaction
(R=8.314 J)(log 4=0.6020)
OR
(c) If the activation energy of a reaction is zero, will the rate of reaction still depend on 1
temperature.
