Review of Previous Lesson
Class, last meeting, we had discussed about the three
literary genres. Now, let us see if you really understood
our previous lesson.
_______, what are the literary genres? The literary genres are Fiction,
Poetry, and Drama.
Very Good!
________, can you differentiate the three? Fiction refers to a made-up story
written in prose. Drama is a story
Excellent! written primarily through dialogue
intended for performance on stage,
and Poetry uses rhythmic language
and imagery to convey emotions,.
It seems that you really understand our previous
lesson. So, let’s proceed to our next lesson. But before
that, let’s have a short activity.
B. Preliminary Activities
Task 1. Motivation
MYSTERY WORD CHALLENGE
I will post a jumbled letter on the board. You will try to
guess what is the hidden word behind the jumbled
letter using the given definition.
C. Lesson Proper
Elements of Fiction
A. Characters are beings who live in the story. They can be
actual people from this planet to aliens from somewhere in
the outer space. They are important in fiction because they
are the ones with whom the readers empathize. Characters
can be flat or round.
A flat character is not sufficiently developed, described
very little, and plays very minor role in the narrative. A
round character, on the other hand, has a leading role in the
narrative.
Characters can also be static or dynamic (also called
developing). A static character remains the same throughout
the narrative while dynamic one undergoes change.
Freytag’s Pyramid
a) Exposition introduces the characters, time, and the
problem.
b) Rising action includes the happenings that the main
character encounters.

Elements of Poetry
A. Rhyme is the easiest feature to identify in a poem. If the
last word in the first line of poetry rhymes with the last
word in the second line, or the third line, you can easily
identify a pattern. Rhyme does not depend upon spelling; it
is a matter of sound, or pronunciation.
B. Rhyme Scheme. When you can identify a repeating
pattern of similar-sounding words at the ends of the lines,
then you have a rhyme scheme.
C. Rhythm or meter is a slightly more difficult aspect of
poetry for some students. There is a natural rise and fall in
our language: we stress certain syllables and words more
than others in order to emphasize meaning. In poetry, these
patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables or words form
a rhythm or meter.
Elements of Drama
Drama is pretty much similar in certain narrative
aspects to fiction, like the presence of characters, plot,
setting, conflict, and, the theme. Since drama is intended
for performance, it has particular elements, though, which
are distinct from other genres. This includes presentation
elements like venue, costumes, set design, lighting design,
and music.
D. Practice Exercise
Group Activity
I will group you into three groups and I will give each
group a literary excerpt from a novel. Each group will
identify the literary genre and the theme of the given
excerpt.
