a) Applications software

Application software refers to programs or applications that are designed to help users to
perform specific tasks on a computer or mobile device. Unlike system software (like operating
systems), which manages the overall functionality of a computer, application software focuses
on enabling users to complete particular activities, such as writing documents, creating
spreadsheets, or editing photos.

Key Characteristics of Applications software:

1. Purpose-Specific: Application software is built to perform particular functions such as
word processing, photo editing, or data a0nalysis.
2. User-Centric: It is designed with the user in mind, focusing on improving productivity,
communication, or entertainment.
3. Graphical User Interface (GUI): Most applications feature a user-friendly interface that
allows users to interact with the software without needing to know programming or
technical details.

Examples of Applications software:

 Word Processors: Microsoft Word, Google Docs
 Spreadsheet Software: Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets
 Web Browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox
 Media Players: VLC Media Player, Windows Media Player
 Email Clients: Microsoft Outlook, Gmail
 Graphics Software: Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW
 Mobile Apps: Instagram, WhatsApp

b) Identifying application software

1. Word Processing Software: This software enables users to create and edit documents.
The most popular.
Examples:
 Microsoft Word: For creating and editing documents.
 Microsoft Excel: For data management and spreadsheets.
 Google Docs: Web-based word processing.
 Microsoft PowerPoint: For creating presentations.

2. Database Software: Database is a structured collection of data. A computer database

relies on database software to organize data and enable database users to perform
database operations. Database software allows users to store and retrieve data from
databases. Examples are Oracle, MS Access, etc.
3. Spreadsheet Software: Allows users to organize, analyze, store, and manipulate
data in a table format using rows and columns. It is widely used for tasks involving
calculations, data management, and financial analysis.

4. Multimedia Software: They allow users to create and play audio and video files. They
are capable of playing media files. Audio converters, audio players, burners, video
encoders and decoders are some forms of multimedia software. Examples of this type of
software include Real Player and Media Player.

5. Presentation Software: The software that is used to display information in the form
of a slide show is known as presentation software. This type of software includes three
functions, namely, editing that allows insertion and formatting of text, methods to
include graphics in the text and a functionality of executing slide shows. Microsoft
PowerPoint is the best example of presentation software.

6. Enterprise Software: It deals with the needs of organization processes and data flow.
Customer relationship management or the financial processes in an organization
are carried out with the help of enterprise software.

7. Information Worker Software: Individual projects within a department and individual

needs of creation and management of information are handled by information worker
software. Documentation tools, resource management tools and personal management
systems fall under the category of this type of application software.

8. Educational Software: Refers to computer programs, applications, or platforms

specifically designed to support and enhance teaching, learning, and educational
activities. These tools are used by students, teachers, and administrators to
facilitate the learning process, improve engagement, and achieve educational
outcomes. Educational software can be interactive, adaptive, and customizable,
catering to different learning styles and levels.. Dictionaries like Britannica and
Encarta, mathematical software like Mat lab and others like Google Earth and NASA
World Wind are some of the well-known names in this category.

9. Simulation Software: Is a type of application that enables users to create a virtual

model of a real-world process, system, or environment. These models are used to
analyze behaviors, test different scenarios, or make predictions about outcomes
without needing to physically engage in the real process. Simulation software is
commonly used in education, engineering, healthcare, business, and scientific research.

10. Content Access Software: It is used to access content without editing. Common
examples of content access software are web browsers and media players.

11. Application Suites: An application suite is an important type of application software. It

consists of a group of applications combined to perform related functions.
OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office are the best examples of this type of application
software. These application suites, as you know, come as bundles of applications like
word processors, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc. Applications in the suite can
work together or operate on each other's files.

12. Software that aid Engineering and Development of Products: These software are used
in the design and development of hardware and software products. Integrated
development environments (IDE) and computer language editing tools falls under this
type of application software. Interestingly, software products are developed using other
software, and software communicate with one another through software. Application
programming interfaces which aid the communication of two or more software are
examples of this application software type.

c) Explain uses of application software in provision services (eg education,

health etc)
Application software plays a pivotal role in the provision of services across various sectors
such as education, healthcare, finance, transportation, and more. These software tools enhance
the efficiency, accessibility, and quality of services provided to individuals and organizations.
