UNIT 1 Computer Application
UNIT 1 Computer Application
Application software refers to programs or applications that are designed to help users to
perform specific tasks on a computer or mobile device. Unlike system software (like operating
systems), which manages the overall functionality of a computer, application software focuses
on enabling users to complete particular activities, such as writing documents, creating
spreadsheets, or editing photos.
1. Word Processing Software: This software enables users to create and edit documents.
The most popular.
Examples:
Microsoft Word: For creating and editing documents.
Microsoft Excel: For data management and spreadsheets.
Google Docs: Web-based word processing.
Microsoft PowerPoint: For creating presentations.
4. Multimedia Software: They allow users to create and play audio and video files. They
are capable of playing media files. Audio converters, audio players, burners, video
encoders and decoders are some forms of multimedia software. Examples of this type of
software include Real Player and Media Player.
5. Presentation Software: The software that is used to display information in the form
of a slide show is known as presentation software. This type of software includes three
functions, namely, editing that allows insertion and formatting of text, methods to
include graphics in the text and a functionality of executing slide shows. Microsoft
PowerPoint is the best example of presentation software.
6. Enterprise Software: It deals with the needs of organization processes and data flow.
Customer relationship management or the financial processes in an organization
are carried out with the help of enterprise software.
10. Content Access Software: It is used to access content without editing. Common
examples of content access software are web browsers and media players.
12. Software that aid Engineering and Development of Products: These software are used
in the design and development of hardware and software products. Integrated
development environments (IDE) and computer language editing tools falls under this
type of application software. Interestingly, software products are developed using other
software, and software communicate with one another through software. Application
programming interfaces which aid the communication of two or more software are
examples of this application software type.
Key Uses:
Learning Management Systems (LMS): Platforms like Moodle, Google Classroom, and
Canvas help manage online courses, distribute educational content, track student progress,
and facilitate communication between students and teachers.
Virtual Classrooms and Video Conferencing: Tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and
Google Meet enable real-time online classes, allowing students to attend lessons remotely.
Educational Software and Apps: Applications like Khan Academy, Duolingo, and
Coursera offer interactive lessons, quizzes, and tutorials to enhance learning experiences
in various subjects.
Digital Content Creation Tools: Software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Prezi, and
Adobe Spark enables teachers and students to create engaging presentations, infographics,
and multimedia content.
Assessment and Grading Systems: Software tools such as Turnitin and Google Forms
assist in conducting ontrline assessments, grading assignments, and detecting plagiarism.
2. Healthcare
Application software in healthcare, often referred to as Health Information Technology (HIT),
improves patient care, streamlines administrative processes, and ensures efficient
communication between healthcare providers (Doctors, admins) and patients.
Key Uses:
Electronic Health Records (EHR) Systems: Tools like Epic, Cerner, and Allscripts
store patient medical histories, treatment plans, test results, and other health data,
improving access to information for doctors and healthcare professionals.
Telemedicine Applications: Platforms such as Teladoc, Amwell, and Doctor on
Demand allow patients to consult with doctors remotely via video calls, offering
convenience and reducing the need for in-person visits.
Medical Imaging Software: Software like DICOM, RadiAnt, and OsiriX processes and
interprets medical imaging (e.g., X-rays, MRIs, CT scans), aiding in the accurate diagnosis
of medical conditions.
Pharmacy Management Systems: Software such as McKesson Pharmacy Systems and
Cerner PharmNet helps manage medication inventories, prescription processing, and
patient medication history.
Patient Management Systems: Applications like Practice Fusion and Kareo assist
healthcare providers in scheduling appointments, billing, and managing patient workflows.
Health and Fitness Apps: Consumer-facing apps like MyFitnessPal, Fitbit, and Apple
Health allow individuals to track fitness, diet, and overall health metrics, promoting
wellness and preventive care.
3. Finance
In the financial sector, application software is critical for managing transactions, automating
processes, ensuring compliance, and providing customer service.
Key Uses:
Banking Software: Applications like Temenos, Finacle, and Finastra automate core
banking functions such as account management, loan processing, and payment processing.
Online and Mobile Banking Apps: Tools such as CRDB App, Bank of America, and
NMB App allow customers to access their accounts, transfer funds, pay bills, and check
balances from their smartphones or computers.
Accounting Software: Tools like QuickBooks, Xero, and FreshBooks help businesses
manage finances by tracking income, expenses, payroll, and tax filings.
Investment Platforms: Applications like Robinhood, E*TRADE, and Wealthfront
provide individuals with access to stock trading, portfolio management, and financial
planning tools.
Fraud Detection and Security Systems: Applications such as FraudLabs Pro and SAS
Fraud Management use algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect fraudulent
activities and secure financial transactions.
4. Transportation
The transportation sector relies on application software to manage logistics, ensure efficient
travel planning, track fleets, and provide customer service.
Key Uses:
Ride-Hailing Apps: Platforms like Uber, Lyft, and Bolt connect drivers with passengers,
enabling users to book rides through their smartphones.
Fleet Management Software: Tools like Samsara, Geotab, and Verizon Connect track
vehicle locations, optimize routes, monitor fuel usage, and schedule maintenance for
transportation fleets.
Public Transportation Apps: Applications like Google Maps, Citymapper, and Transit
provide real-time data on bus and train schedules, navigation, and traffic updates.
Logistics and Supply Chain Management: Software like SAP Transportation
Management, Oracle SCM, and JDA Software helps manage the movement of goods,
inventory levels, and shipping schedules for businesses.
