MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

Course Syllabus

Lead Department: Mathematics and Statistics Department

College: College of Science
Course Code: GEMATMW

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course aims to discuss the nature of mathematics leading to the appreciation of its practical, intellectual, social, and aesthetic
dimensions. It includes the study of the nature of mathematics and how the perception of this leads to different tools for
understanding and dealing with various aspects of present-day living, such as managing personal finances, making social choices,
appreciating geometric designs, understanding codes used in data transmissions and security, and dividing limited resources fairly.

UNIVERSITY ELGA: LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO):

● Culturally Sensitive Critical and Creative On completion of the course, the student is expected to be

II. FINAL COURSE OUTPUT:

As evidence of attaining the above learning outcomes, the student is required to do and submit the following during the
indicated dates of the term.

LEARNING OUTCOME REQUIRED OUTPUT DUE DATE

Demonstrate knowledge and skills in mathematics to
● analyze personal and social problems; ● Reflection Project
● make sound and ethical decisions through the ● Final Group Output 13th Week
use of mathematical and technical tools; and
● explain and present solutions effectively in
written or oral form.

Whenever possible, the students will involve inputs from industry practitioners to see real-life applications of the
mathematics they have learned in the course.

1. For the reflection project (which may be assigned as an individual or group output), the students are expected
to create an output that shows the following:
● Understanding the overarching idea of each module so that the learners can answer each essential
question indicated in the module;
● Reflection on how the different mathematical concepts are used and applied to offer solutions to
modern-world real-life problems;
● Demonstration of meaningful learning by being able to connect the different mathematical concepts
learned through the course describing how these are linked to their knowledge in the past and present.

2. The group learning output should exhibit the use of mathematical reasoning, writing, and proving in tackling
solutions to various issues encompassing social, political, economic, and financial aspects or involving natural
sciences, technology, and the arts.

3. Each learning output is a hard requirement, so non-submission of any of these translates into a grade equivalent
to NO CREDIT so that the student will be asked to re-enroll in the course.

4. If the submitted outputs are in video format and uploaded to YouTube or shared via Google Drive, the students
are not obliged to give access to the general public. However, it is their responsibility to ensure that the links
they give to the teacher are working, that is, the videos can be viewed for checking upon project submission.

5. The learning output forms include, but are not limited to, any of the following:

● Digital Stories
● Podcasts
● Mini-magazine
● Short film

VIII. POLICIES

1. Learning outputs are required and not optional to pass the course.

2. The learning management system used in the course is AnimoSpace. It is the responsibility of the student to
monitor the announcements of the instructor(s) and the scheduled activities designed for learning to achieve the
aims of the course. Checking the calendar of activities for the course every week is highly recommended.

3. About Assignments
a. Assignments will be posted through AnimoSpace. The student must regularly check his/her Canvas
account for announcements and posts concerning the deadlines of these assignments.
b. We value academic integrity. Submitting plagiarized work, whether copied from a fellow student or off the
web, is unacceptable. Plagiarism cases will lead to sanctions. See pages 39-40 of the STUDENT
HANDBOOK.
c. Follow the instructions of the teacher on the manner of submission of assignments (e.g., online,
paper). After the deadline, the teacher may give a grace period to accept late assignments. However, these
will still be marked late so that corresponding points may be deducted from the grade.

4. Some assignments are categorized as group assignments and in this case, only one submission is required.
Discussions among group members are encouraged for the exchange of ideas and the sharing of learnings. For
these collaborative works, every member is expected to cooperate and give his/her best to contribute to the
group’s output.

5. It is expected that each required assignment/output must be organized neatly. Assignments may be written in
Filipino or English, depending on the teacher’s instructions.
