Reading : A trip to remember In February 2014, I went to Venice for the carnival. Here is what I found out about this amazing event: It began in 1162 when the people of Venice started to dance in St Mark’s Square. It became very famous all over Europe because of the colourful costumes that people wore. However, while the King of Austria was ruling Venice, he stopped the carnival because he did not like the wild atmosphere. It finally started up again in the city in 1979 and is now celebrated at the same time every year. The costumes at the carnival are very beautiful and unusual. People wear dresses, long black coats, strange hats and masks that cover their faces. The masks are what make the carnival so different to other carnivals. There are competitions for the best costume. If you want to join in with the party atmosphere, you will need to buy a mask! During the carnival many parties take place, but St Mark’s Square is the best place to be. This is where everyone goes. There is food, music and dance. It can get very busy, so if that’s a little too much you can always go into one of the small streets and still see all the fun. There is also the Arsenal, an enormous building where various theatre performances, concerts and other events take place during this extraordinary and unforgettable festival. 1. Researchers have found that people believe having money, getting a dream job or buying a big house will make them happy. However, scientists have discovered that these things aren’t important for our happiness. They found that people feel happier when they have a positive experience: buying something you want will only make you happy for a short time. Scientists did an experiment to see what happened when a group of young adults bought something, and compared it to them having an enjoyable experience. They found that the feelings from having a positive experience, like spending time with friends, are much stronger and longer lasting than when we buy something. Fitness is very important to good health at all ages. But did you know that exercise can also make you happy? When we exercise, we produce chemicals in our brain called endorphins. They make us feel positive and energetic. Doing just thirty minutes of exercise can improve how we feel. Researchers did experiments with middle-aged and elderly people. They were asked to do half an hour of exercise a day. The results showed a big increase in their levels of happiness. Hobbies are also important for happiness. They can lower your stress levels by making you forget your problems and thinking about something else. Hobbies are also good for spending time with other people and making new friends. Learning new things through a hobby also makes you feel happier and more positive about yourself. 1. Choose the best title. A. Fitness and Happiness B. How to be Happy C. The importance of hobbies 2. Reading: Designing in the street A group of design students from a university in the UK did a project about street design. They wanted to create interesting spaces in cities. The students focused on part of Gloucester Road in central London. The students watched the street for a week and talked to people about how they wanted the street to change. Then the students thought about how they could improve the neighbourhood. They wanted to encourage a sense of community between people who didn’t know each other. One of the ideas was ‘Bus Stop Messaging’. They put a large notebook on a bus stop with the question, ‘What are you thinking about?’ Many people on the street wrote their thoughts on it. The students discovered that people liked sharing their stories with each other. The next experiment was a ‘Swap Box’. This was a box that people could leave things in that they didn’t want, and ask for things they wanted. Each object in the Swap Box had a paper label attached with a short story about the history of the object. This idea proved a good way of recycling things. Street Furniture Pets’ was an innovative idea where local people were responsible for an object in the street that used electricity, like a street light. They had to record how much electricity was used by the ‘pet’. The idea behind this was to make people think about energy use and how to conserve it. Although the ideas were only used for a short time, the students’ creativity helped to change the street into a friendly place which encouraged a sense of community. 1.
