GEOGRAPHY
2 hours
(Physical geography)
TIME: 2 hours
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
The total time of 2 hours includes ten minutes for you to study the items
before you beginning responding.
Respond to TWO items only.
You are advised to divide your time equally between the two items.
All items carry equal scores.
1
Item 1
Mr.Musoke is a senior five student of geography at Lovanna international school
and has been fascinated with the new topic: “the structure of the earth.” Among the
few findings in the topics were the different aspects of the external structure of the
earth. However, he cannot remember majority of what he studied.
You have been tasked to help mr.Musoke to recall what he studied.
Tasks
Briefly explain to Mr.Musoke the external structure of the earth with
reference to the atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere and the impact of
each.
Item 2
the study of the earth’s internal structure has been so confusing to some people
because initially some scholars believed that the earth was something very flat.
Others believed the earth was like a floating disk on water. Modern geologists and
scientists have come up with proper evidence on the internal structure and shape of
the earth, they have further asserted that the earth has concentric shells just like a
dissected apple fruit and that all these concentric shells have specific
characteristics in terms of density, depth and temperature.
You have been selected by the geological society of your country, to explain to the
masses bout the internal structure of the earth.
Task
With a help of well labelled diagrams, explain to the masses the internal
structure of the earth.
Item 3
A lot of scholars have always scratched their heads on what could have been the
origin of continents and ocean basins, the earliest scholars believed in unrealistic
theories like expanding earth theory, the moon theory, the tetrahedron hypothesis
in trying to explain the origin of continents and ocean basins. These earlier theories
of people like Edward Forbes, Georges Lamataire and Francis Bacon opened doors
for modern scholars like Alfred Wegner, Harry Hess, Fredrick B Taylor and
Robert Dietz who thoroughly explained the possible origin of present day
continents and ocean basins.
One of the televisions called National geographic channel has hired you to host a
program that will be airing on their television for some viewers who have interest
in nature and earth geography.
Task
Using the knowledge of continental drifting discuss the origin of
continents with reference to the works of modern scholars that you will
base on to make the program on the television more meaningful and
relevant.
